Crystal Lake #SeriesReview ‼️
I started watching this fresh off the heels of the Carrie series (which I considered a letdown.) I’m happy to say Crystal Lake will get a much better review.
Linda Cardellini absolutely owns her role. She switches from being a prim and proper single mother of the 70’s to a deranged and hysterical murderer seamlessly. She makes you care about her character, and you’re always rooting for her despite some of the terrible things she does.
When the series introduced Jason’s backstory I knew it was going to divide a lot of longtime F13 fans.
In my opinion, the original run of movies didn’t have much of an origin story and while what this series accomplishes isn’t perfect, it establishes a lore that I not only find acceptable but enjoyable as well. That’s not bad for cleaning up the messy past that was the result of filmmakers flying by the seat of their pants throughout most of the filmography.
What most F13 fans watch the movies for is the kills and boy do we get some good ones. Aside from a couple of goofy digitally enhanced kill scenes, the vast majority of blood spilled is well done and within the spirit of the franchise.
I do wish the series cleaned up the ending of Grace and Lee’s story, but I suppose that’s because they want to make a second season. I’m not sure how that will pan out because there isn’t much space for things to occur between where we left off and the beginning of the first movie from a chronological standpoint… but if they do drop another season, I’ll watch it.
Very solid 4 out of 5 stars

Have you seen it yet? What did you think? All opinions welcome!

John Carpenter’s THE THING
I can’t believe this is my fianceé’s first time watching this, but as a suspense and body horror enthusiast, I think she’ll love it.
Is THE THING one of your favorite horror movies?

Grave of the Leviathans: A Collection of Horror by Elias Witherow
This is the first time I’ve read a short story collection from Elias Witherow. As expected, there is a spectrum of quality.
Some of the highlights include stories like Cactus, Snow Burn, and The Nightmare Virus. Each of these stories punches you in the gut, but they also follow a pretty solid plot with characters you can connect to and care about. Stories like these carry the collection and are over in an instant because the pages turn so fast. They leave an impact as you imagine yourself in these horrifying scenarios, haunting the empathetic mind.
Some of the lowlights are stories like Rolling Thunder, First Day Best Day, and Generational Rage. They still bring the splatter-punk gross-out stuff, which is horrifying in itself, but they don’t present a character or theme to care about throughout the story, which ultimately makes them feel empty and somewhat aimless. These stories are by no means “bad”, but they could’ve been better. Witherow’s writing is visceral and not meant for the weak stomached, so consider yourself warned since there is a ton of graphic content.
Overall I can say I was properly entertained. If you’re someone that likes to dive into extreme horror, then I’d recommend picking up Witherow’s novels, as some of those are the best horror I’ve read in quite a while.
3.5 out of 5 stars.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Have you read any of Witherow’s books like The Black Farm or The Third Parent? What did you think?

Grave of the Leviathans: A Collection of Horror by Elias Witherow
I’ve loved just about everything I’ve read from Witherow, so why not start some short stories during spooky season?
Scary Movie 3 was released 23 years ago today!
What’s your favorite scene from the last “decent” Scary Movie film?
Do you like new-gen or old slashers more?
I like both, but I’ve got to give the edge to the movies I grew up with. Call it nostalgia if you want, they hit harder.
Is it crazy to say that I think Robert Eggers movies are kind of mid?
Don’t get me wrong, they’re beautiful visually, but they’re also snoozefests more often than not.
