This Budget was meant to be a turning point for Britain to put the country on a different path, promised by Burnham. But whilst Healey’s support on the cost of living and doing business will be welcomed, if we’re being honest, it pales in comparison to what was needed... 🧵1/4

This story is extremely important: A whistleblower revealed that Brazil's far-right Bolsonaro family dynasty met with Meta to discuss US plans to interfere in Brazil's election, to prevent Lula from winning. Lula's Facebook and Instagram accounts were censored a few days before the first round of the presidential election. This had a huge impact on the election, because Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which are all owned by Meta, are the most popular apps in Brazil, and are hugely influential all across Latin America. (Jair Bolsonaro's son Flávio was declared the winner of the first round of the vote, by a narrow margin.) Meta later admitted that Lula's accounts had been restricted, but it claimed that this was supposedly due to a "technical error"... The whistleblower who disclosed this is Nadia Beller, a Bolivian journalist who was almost killed by hitmen hired by Fernando Cerimedo, a far-right Argentine political operative who oversees election interference, bots, and disinformation campaigns. Cerimedo is closely linked to the US government and has worked for pretty much every right-wing leader in Latin America. He was photographed with Donald Trump Jr. and members of the Bolsonaro family, and he received an award at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida a few months before he was arrested for the failed assassination attempt against Beller, his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Be audacious @andyburnham! REMEMBER: 75% of the UK public back a Wealth Tax (& 75% of UK millionaires do too!) The howlers might be loud (because they own newspapers and social media platforms), but in reality they are a tiny, greedy minority protecting their stash.

Proud to have worked with colleagues at Tax Justice UK on this - calling for excess profits taxes on energy, banking, defence and big agribusiness, etc - to curb corporate profiteering + to provide direct support to people and businesses struggling with the cost of living.

Wayne Couzens, who kidnapped, raped, and murdered Sarah Everard, will still be paid £7000 per year in taxpayer-funded pensions. Police officers can retire at 55 with a guaranteed pension for life. UK state pension age is 66 In the past five years, 639 officers have been dismissed for sexual assault on children, sexual activity while on duty, and having relationships with victims. Only 52 pensions have been reduced or removed. I don’t know how women are supposed to trust the police, when they’re still paying to support the lives of officers who have committed such heinous crimes.

Best mates with a convicted paedophile, handed over sensitive government documents, a history of scandals in previous jobs and still gets a £75k payout. The handling of Mandelson is an outrage - what message does it send to everyon else?

🇬🇧 50 UK families have more wealth than 34 million of us COMBINED. 🙃 Extreme wealth concentration is the crisis. Everything else is just a useful distraction for the billionaires bleeding us dry.

A few billionaires, corporations & opaque networks now dominate UK political funding. Unless the new Elections Bill is strengthened, our democracy will remain at risk of corruption by the super rich. 📖 Read more 👇 taxjustice.uk/blog/how-to-st…

Sorry, I couldn't make it past point 1. How on earth does it cost £158,000 to house a family of 3 for a year?? Three grand a week?? There are literally millions of families larger than this paying mortgages, energy bills, food bills, council tax and more on a taxed income of less than a third of that. You can get an all inclusive 4 star beach resort hotel 14 night break during the school holidays from Jet 2 for £1800 a week for a family of 3, so how on God's green earth do you manage to make single room with a bunk bed in Birmingham cost £3k a week. How?
Our pilot of new incentives to remove failed asylum seeking families will save taxpayers up to £20 million. Here's why 👇 1. It costs 158k to put up a family of 3 in an asylum hotel for 1 year. It costs 48k more to forcibly remove someone. A 10k per person incentive, up to a max of 40k per family, will save money. 2. If someone refuses an incentive, we will move to a forced removal. If you have no right to be in this country, you should not be allowed to stay. 3. There is nothing new about incentive payments. The Tories did it. Even Reform say they will do it. 4. Higher incentives have worked in Denmark. 95% of returns there are voluntary. 5. These incentives are not a pull factor. Asylum claims in Denmark are at a 40-year low. And asylum seekers spend tens of thousands of pounds getting to this country, that's more than any incentive payment. 6. This is a pilot of 150 families. We will see if it works and scale it if it does. That's taking a smart approach, that saves taxpayers' money, to restoring order at our borders. I make no apology for doing that.

Presuming the MPs and other political figures who campaigned so vigorously against the ban on violent Maccabi fans because it was racist will now be demanding resignations, and calling this Islamophobic.
Uefa said supporters of the Turkish club had thrown objects and lit fireworks during the last-16 play-off tie second leg in Turin on 25 February. Liverpool are set to face Galatasaray in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on 18 March at Anfield.

Bombing Iran in the middle of negotiations, while starving Cuba, while genociding Palestinians, while threatening to invade Greenland… the US and Israel are the single greatest threat to humanity and it’s not even close. We are all forced to live in the nightmare they create.

When you ask 'Green curious Labour voters' their major hesitation about switching Green, overwhelmingly its about letting Farage in or a wasted vote - not values. The strategic danger for the Govt of the Greens even being vaguely competitive in hundreds of seats is big.

Full victory speech of The Green Party's Hannah Spencer who wins the Gorton and Denton by Election: 14,980 - Greens 10,578 - Reform UK 9,364 - Labour "Okay. with me because this is a lot" "I didn't grow up wanting to be a politician. I'm a plumber" "And two weeks ago, during all this, I also qualified as a plasterer" "Because even in chaos, even under pressure, I get things done" "I am no different to every single person here in this constituency. I work hard. That is what we do" "Except things have changed a lot over the last few decades. Because working hard used to get you something" "It got you a house, a nice life, holidays. It got you somewhere" "But now? Working hard? What does that get you?" "Because talk to anyone here and they will tell you, the people who work hard but can't put food on the table, can't get their kids school uniforms, can't put their heating on, can't live off the pension they worked hard to save for, can't even begin to dream about ever having a holiday, ever "Because life has changed" "Instead of working for a nice life, we're working to line the pockets of billionaires" "We are being bled dry" "And I don't think it's extreme or radical to think working hard should get you a nice life" "And I don't think that if you're not able to work that you should still have a nice life" "I think that absolutely everybody should get a nice life" "And clearly, I'm not the only person who thinks that" "Because I've made clear my position and my commitment to working class communities, the community that I am from" "People in their thousands told me on the doorsteps and at the ballot box, that what we are sick of is being let down and looked down on, that we are sick of our hard work making other people rich" "I lived in this constituency at one of the most difficult and challenging periods of my life" "I saw how strong the community was at holding things together" "But I saw how much harder life is when the things around you are broken, the litter, the fly-tipping, the dirty air" "And when I moved, it became even clearer. And this is why I am fighting for the community that I lived in and that I still work in" "Because I absolutely refuse to accept that we should ever have to move and leave our our communities for good schools, a thriving high street, and clean air. And I will not accept a society where having more money gets you a longer life expectancy" "And so when it came to fighting for people here, to stand in this election, well, how could I not fight? Because here, this is what we do" "We fight for each other in this very diverse constituency, where our struggles might not always be the same, but where we know how hard life can be and we stick together" "Whatever our beliefs, our backgrounds, our color, or our level of education, we stick up for each other" "And to those who voted for me, I know that earning your trust starts now" "One vote on one night is not something I will take for granted or assume will happen again" "I will earn your trust" "And to those who didn't vote for me, I will always work hard for you, and I will always be honest, and I will always be decent" "To our Muslim communities, who this week suffered an attempted attack during Ramadan, whilst I was being welcomed by women at a mosque in Longsight, someone just down the road walked into a mosque carrying an axe" "And whilst we were gathered and eating together, an act of terror could easily have taken place" "And I can't and won't accept this victory tonight without calling out the politicians and divisive figures who constantly scapegoat and blame our communities for all the problems in society" "My Muslim friends and neighbors are just like me, human" "And of course, to our White working class communities, the background that I have become so proud to be from" "We know how it feels to be looked down on, maybe because we didn't do well at school, maybe because we do dirty manual jobs, because we are shut out of places we should be in" "To people here in Gorton and Denton, who feel left behind and isolated, I see you and I will fight for you" "Because whilst our communities may sometimes be labeled in different ways, the thing everyone seems to have underestimated here, especially over the last few weeks, is how similar we all actually are. How we have common ground, how we get along, how we stand up for each other" "The cracks that were starting to show can be healed, and I believe that it is through offering people hope and a chance to do things differently and do things better" "Now to my customers, I'm sorry, but I think I might have to cancel the work that you have booked in, because I'm heading to Parliament" "And when I get there, I will make space for everyone doing jobs like mine. We will finally get a seat at the table" "And to Layla, the little girl who had the pleasure of meeting and holding this week, I promised you I would try and improve the world that you are growing up in. I told you that I am not perfect, but that I always try my best" "I always try and do the right thing" "Now something exciting is definitely happening and I invite you all to be part of it" "Come and join the Green Party so that we can spread hope and win everywhere across the country" "Our strength will grow as more and more of us come together. We have shown that we don't have to accept being turned against each other" "We can demand better without hating each other. We can do that together" "We ran a hopeful campaign backed by thousands of volunteers and activists" "We defeated the parties of billionaire donors" "We have shown that we don't have to accept being turned against each other at all, and we did this with the people who live here side by side, shoulder to shoulder, just as we have always done in this constituency and in the whole of Greater Manchester. Because this is is Manchester and we do things differently here" "Thank you so, so much to everybody" "Thank you"
