It was an absolute delight to be invited to deliver the main address at the 2026 media launch of National Reading Competition held on Tuesday night. As a Ministry, we remain resolute that literacy is the foundation of national progress. Since its establishment in 1988, the National Reading Competition has stood as the flagship outreach programme of the Jamaica Library Service, an agency of the Ministry of Education,Skills,Youth and Information. This initiative reflects our firm belief that reading is central to national inspiration and essential to Jamaica’s continued development. The growth of this programme is both encouraging and instructive. In 2024,participation stood at 3,133 readers. In 2025, that number increased significantly to 5,623 readers (a 78% increase). For 2026,we are setting our sights even higher, with a target of over 6,000 participants.Over its lifetime, the competition has impacted more than 100,000 Jamaicans. This momentum reflects a renewed national enthusiasm for reading, strengthened by meaningful collaboration among schools, libraries, families, and communities. Special thanks to the many sponsors of this year’s competition.

The Jamaica Library Service (JLS) is poised to enhance its technological capabilities and expand its educational outreach with a donation of 200 laptop computers. The devices have been provided by e-Learning Jamaica Limited (e-LJAM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Youth. These have already been delivered to the JLS, however, a ceremony for the formal presentation is slated for the Joyce Robinson Hall at the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Library today (August 13). Chief Executive Officer of e-LJAM, Andrew Lee, says the donation marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to equip library and administrative professionals across the parish library network with tools to improve service delivery and communication. Meanwhile, JLS Director General, Maureen Thompson, has expressed gratitude for the donation, while highlighting its impact. Visit jis.gov.jm/jamaica-library-s… for more info.

To be considered a nation’s hero is the greatest honor that can be bestowed on an individual. The Right Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante has been an exemplary figure and in this our 60th year of independence, it is quite fitting that we unveil this monument in his honor.
