1/15 New creatine paper in JISSN claims 10 g/d helps middle-aged and older adults keep muscle, strength and cognitive function, with or without exercise. I read all 33 pages. The data don't support those conclusions. A 🧵
This new creatine study is insane. People who never trained took 10g of creatine a day and gained more lean tissue (2.43 lbs) than people who were lifting 3x a week with no creatine (0.31 lbs). Here's the breakdown: (1/18)
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The lean tissue gains in the no-exercise creatine group were measured by DXA body scans which creatine affects by increasing intracellular water that registers as lean mass. The decision to exercise or not was self-selected by participants not randomized. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13… medicalnewstoday.com/articles/creat…

My NYT editor: Wanna write something about sports/workout supplements? Me: Basically nothing works, IMO, other than a VERY short list the IOC drew up. Her: Okay, write that. So (after calling a few people) I did: nytimes.com/2025/09/15/well/…

In our recent meta-analysis with trained athletes, did the athletes who improved their VO2max more also improve their endurance performance more?🤔 No! 😮 In this dataset, +1% change in VO2max was associated with only +0.04% change in TT performance. But why? 1/15🧵

INDUSTRY BIAS IN NUTRITION RESEARCH? One type of bias is publication bias (aka desk draw bias) Not publishing some studies due to the direction or strength of their findings eg. if findings do not conform to a hypothesis Is there evidence of this bias in nutrition research?

Lessons Learned from Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in Para Cyclists 1/ CGM is increasingly explored as a tool to optimize dietary counseling in athletes. What can we learn from its application in Para athletes? Our new study investigated this: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… 🧵

13/ 📝 Yes, this is a small study with limitations. Still, we believe the findings add valuable insights into the potential uses and limitations of CGM in (Para) athletes. Want to explore more? Link to full paper is in first message, it is available #openaccess in @EurJSportSci.
