Today is the feast of St Frideswide, the Anglo-Saxon nun who is the patron saint of Oxford. She led a religious community in the early 8th century on the site of what is now Christ Church Cathedral, where this medieval window of her survives.

Today we remember St Francis of Assisi (c.1181-1226), the Italian mystic, poet and friar known for his poverty, charity and humility. St Francis is especially remembered for his love of God's creation, and his feast day marks the end of the Church's new Season of Creation.

I am SO glad I saw this in Bayeux a few years back because the reports I am hearing are utterly dreadful. So sorry Dr Ellen
Waited since I was 7 years old to see the Bayeux Tapestry. Got in an hour-long online queue to spend £50 on tickets. Got there ahead of time. Stood in a queue for 20 minutes. Then was told halfway through the queue that the gallery was closing. The @britishmuseum stinks 😭

A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system. Today I set out a different path for Britain. You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics. Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love. If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other. It's time to draw a line. To move beyond a decade of drift and division. To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country. To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode. To hope again.

#pape #pontifex #notredame #notredamedeparis

Today is the feast of St Birinus, 'Apostle to the West Saxons', who in c.634 came to convert Wessex to Christianity. He baptised King Cynegils (tradition says in the River Thame), and became the first Bishop of Dorchester-on-Thames in Oxfordshire aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/…

And above all she helped many many children learn to read. The fact that you know who I mean says it all.

Today marked one month since I became Prime Minister. Cutting tax on electricity bills. Capping bus fares at £2 in England. Making subscriptions easier to cancel. Cracking down on fake discounts. Giving 14-year-olds early access to technical education. Opening 159 new mental health centres. Investing to get all rough sleepers off the street this winter. Supporting farmers affected by the drought. Cutting business rates for pubs, clubs, and music venues. Shutting down 13 more asylum hotels. Giving mayors a share of income tax. Extending the 16-17 Saver Railcard. Bringing buses in the West Midlands under public control. Fast-tracking new homes near train stations. Cleaning up illegal waste dumps. Giving communities and councils more power over what opens on their high street. Opening No10 North. Giving disabled people 24/7 free bus travel. Delivering the biggest transfer of power, funding and responsibility from Westminster in a generation. It's a start, but I’m not complacent. I know that people need more and I promise that I will do everything I can to make yours and your family’s lives better. We're doing things differently to give people more breathing space and bring back hope. Here’s to the next month.

We’ve got too used to seeing people sleeping in doorways and outside stations. It isn’t normal. And I won’t accept it. Today, we’re announcing that everyone sleeping rough this winter will be offered a route off the streets if they need it. We did it during the pandemic. We can do it again. Let’s get everyone in for Christmas. Then let’s end rough sleeping for good.

Until last week, men over 50 were entitled to a free PSA prostate cancer check. But the government has now decided to withdraw that right. I cannot for the life of me work out what their reasoning might be.

Powerful letter in the @ChurchTimes about the new tax on church repairs. Volunteers are already doing so much so churches can stay open and available to all. Taxing them a further 20% for repairs when museums which are free to enter do not pay tax is a wrong that must be righted.

During years when the BBC was often institutionally sceptical about covering religion, Ed's journalism - unfailingly polite, scrupulous, rigorous - showed why it mattered. He was also quietly encouraging to so many, not least as he showed how to be a Christian journalist.

Andy Burnham is as good a communicator as I've ever seen coming into Downing Street, so impressed with the comms configuration: He's not taking playbook from any British PM, he's trying to build a feeling of hope a la early Reagan, first term Clinton, both terms Obama - paint a happy future, raise peoples' souls. Purely in terms of the positioning it is outstanding. PS It could all go wrong quickly but this is always true.

Today, we mark the 21st anniversary of the 7/7 attacks, remembering the 52 people who were killed and the many more who were injured. 🥀 We also remember the courage and solidarity shown by TfL colleagues, the emergency services and members of the public on that tragic day. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of those who were affected.

Last night at @ChChCathedralOx - a concert celebrating 500 years of the Choir, expertly led by Peter Holder: From Taverner to Today. And obviously some more Thomas Denny stained glass
