My boss called me into his office and asked me to explain why my entire department was refusing to work. I thought I was about to lose my job. I had worked under him for three years. I was his most trusted employee, and he often praised me for being hardworking and loyal. But there was one thing he never liked: I was always defending my junior colleagues whenever he treated them unfairly. Last Friday, he announced that everyone in the department would work throughout the weekend without overtime pay. Nobody complained publicly. Instead, I told the team that nobody should sacrifice their family time for unpaid work. On Monday morning, my boss summoned me. "Who gave you the authority to turn my employees against me?" he shouted. I calmly replied, "Sir, I didn't turn anyone against you. I simply reminded them that they are human beings, not machines." He threatened to fire me. I nodded and placed a document on his desk. It was a resignation letter. But that wasn't what made him go silent. Attached to it was a signed petition from 17 employees, including his personal assistant, reporting months of unpaid overtime, intimidation and workplace harassment to the company's board. I had helped them document everything. He looked at me and asked, "So you've been planning this behind my back?" I replied, "No, sir. We were hoping you would change before it got to this point." Three days later, the company's board invited all of us for an investigation. And guess who was asked to explain his actions? My boss.
