This is my favorite class to teach at @TED_Uni. So far this semester, we have had great talks about selfies, memes, cats, hashtags, influencers, misinformation, collective intelligence, digital society, and more. #MediaStudies

As we mourn Michael Burawoy, a brilliant scholar who envisioned and fought for a better world, let us remember his words and act on them.

ALT Now is the time for sociology to wake up and take a grip on itself, recover its original mission to defend society against an overweening state and out-of-control market, battle the forces of extinction by elaborating visions growing in the interstices of capitalism. It cannot forsake its utopian and anti-utopian commitments: exposing possibilities within limits and thereby expanding the limits of the possible.
RIP Michael Burawoy
I was fortunate enough to hear him speak multiple times, going all the way back to the 2014 ISA World Congress in Japan. He was one of the most inspiring sociologists I ever heard. We need more powerful communicators like him.

What happens when social movements try to address internal inequalities that define marginalized identity groups? Do internal efforts to redress the marginalization of particular subgroups within activist ranks undermine broader relations of solidarity?
Network analyses of over 8 million tweets between 2015-16 revealed that #SayHerName increased network density among #BlackLivesMatter users, finding no indication that organizing around intersectionally marginalized identities fragments or weakens movements' online networks.
Our special issue in @SocMovStudies on #ContentiousData is being published as a book by Routledge

Sociologist Max Weber defined "patrimonialism" as a regime based on the arbitrary rule of leaders who view themselves as traditional "fathers" of their nations and run the state like a family business built on personal loyalties. #sociology
