Out today - 1pm UK: Is capitalism destroying democracy — and why can’t we seem to stop it? As billionaire wealth soars to record highs and public trust in capitalism collapses, the ultra-rich are turning unprecedented fortunes into political power. As more countries slide toward authoritarianism, are we witnessing a crisis of democracy—or the inevitable consequences of a system designed to concentrate wealth and power? This week on The Tea, we’re joined by one of the world's top political economists, @jasonhickel to ask what it would take to build an economy that serves people and the planet, rather than the ultra-rich. Under capitalism, no investor will voluntarily walk away from a highly profitable industry like fossil fuels – even if it’s causing ecological breakdown. This is why solving the climate crisis requires overcoming capitalism. @JasonHickel on the Better Future Pod:

Never forget that the clowns who are currently saying “we can’t stop climate change, just accept it” are the same people who spent the last decade doing everything possible to prevent us from stopping climate change.

I sat with a friend who was telling me how Israel executed his entire family, including his wife and children. He told me, "We were trapped in a house in northern Gaza. The army was announcing over loudspeakers that everyone inside should come out with their hands on their heads, and that the army wouldn't kill them." He said, "I didn't know what to do except leave. My family and I left the house one by one, with our hands on our heads. A soldier called us to stand against a wall. Suddenly, I heard gunfire, and I didn't wake up until I was in the hospital. I learned that they had executed my entire family. I was injured and bled for a long time, and I survived after ambulances arrived. One of the doctors told me that Israel had killed my entire family, including my mother, father, wife, and two children." He told me the story with eyes full of sorrow, pain, and tears. This is one of the testimonies of Israel's terrorism against families in Gaza.

Today in 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested by apartheid police, with support from the CIA, for resisting white minority rule. He was imprisoned for 27 years. US government agencies listed Mandela as a "terrorist" until 2008.

we're told Israel is "the only democracy in the Middle East" – but they govern a population under military occupation without the right to vote. that’s apartheid. Western governments know this, and choose to support them anyway. why? @JasonHickel on the Better Future Pod:

This grotesque headline is from the Telegraph. 3,000 people in Britain have been killed in heatwaves this year so far. 20,000 in Europe. Even if Britain did get to “embrace Mediterranean life”, what about the actual Mediterranean, what do they get to embrace? What about India? The indifference of the British elite toward mass suffering is astonishing.

This new study finds that the total death toll in Europe during the June heatwave exceeds 20,000 people. "This result highlights the accelerating threat of mass heat mortality events in Europe despite previous adaptations to heat." Pre-print here: zenodo.org/records/21083733

Right, the boycott should apply to all of Israel. It is an apartheid regime that is carrying out a genocide of the Palestinian people and this fact is clear for all to see. Genocidal apartheid regimes should absolutely be isolated.

🚫 A boycott of all trade with settlements is practically and politically impossible and risks becoming a de facto boycott of all of 🇮🇱. 🇮🇱 votes on 27 October, with opp. ahead in polls. A ban will help the Israeli right and harm the centre and left’s push for intl. diplomacy. 3⃣ The 🇮🇱 and 🇵🇸 economies are interlinked. With the WB economy already fragile, a ban could be catastrophic. Extensive 🇮🇱 🇬🇧 commercial relationship creates significant legal, economic and practical complications. These may have unintended consequences for pharma💊, banking 🏦 , higher education 🎓 , charities ❤️, financial services 💹 and wider 🇮🇱 🇬🇧 trade 🏛️ A ban will affect Jerusalem – 38% of whose residents are Israeli-Arabs – and the Old City. The future of Jerusalem is highly sensitive and at the heart of previous 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 negotiations. (12/14)

capitalism has always required cheap labor and resources from a periphery, and the West has maintained that imperial arrangement through violence.  it’s imperative that we transition to a post-capitalist economic system. @jasonhickel on the Better Future Pod:

This result might even be conservative. The study estimates 5,210 deaths in France, which is shy of the 5,700 that the French authorities just recently announced: theguardian.com/world/2026/j…
