It is a myth, @EricLevitz, that Texas demonstrates that deregulation enables renewables to replace fossil fuels. The amount of coal in Texas' energy mix dropped, yes, but fossil fuels overall have grown and annual emissions have remained constant. Not good.
The climate case for the permitting reform bill is simple: Making all energy infrastructure easier to build will enable renewables to flourish — and erode fossil fuels' market share. And we have good reason to believe that's true — it's called Texas. vox.com/politics/508196/perm…

Here's a blinding flash of the obvious: if the Senate flips to Dems on Tuesday, Mike Lee will not be chairing the ENR Committee and can no longer demand poison pills as a condition for advancing a bill out of committee. A Dem victory changes some political constraints under which BAAJA was negotiated.
Mike Lee is a mortal enemy of the federal land system, and he’s in the driver’s seat of this latest permitting reform effort.

I’ve lost hope that responsible people and journalists will ever wake up to the unprecedented catastrophe that is unfolding on this planet

The world we’re flirting with right now is truly dystopian. Let’s not do this, people.

WAR IS KILLING THE PLANET.
War is killing the planet & no one seems to care because they think it’s a net gain which it’s not. It’s only a short term military gain but the effects that it has on the planet is long lasting. I guess revenge for killing humans is to kill to the planet

Excellent questions.
There are a couple of like little mini questions I'd like to ask as a baselining of BAAJA debates: A) Why do you believe that the US is spending ~ the same on the grid as China and getting 20x less capacity? B) How much electricity does it take to full electrify the economy? How much grid does it take? How much less land does it take if you use higher voltage lines? C) What are the current sources of capacity value, and how do they saturate to maintain resource adequacy? D) Map out for me what 90% clean looks like with just wind, solar, batteries, and gas. How much gas capacity do you need to maintain grid reliability? E) What if the tariffs go away and you add emissions policy down the line. What is possible per dollar in 3 years with and without permitting reform? F) The permitting laws being reformed only apply to major federal projects. Should it be harder to build public infrastructure or private infrastructure?

It is simply the case that #BAAJA has no provision that data centers either 1) must connect to the grid or 2) use their own clean energy.

Does the White House actually think they’ll get a deal if they continue to refuse what they’re obligated to do ASAP under a court order or do they think reporters won’t catch wind of the federal court filings saying they’re trying to entrap wind farm developers
Scoop in MIDDAY: The Trump admin is advancing two more wind projects held up at the Pentagon, one in Texas and another in North Dakota. It's the 4th tranche of similar approvals. Both are "repowerings", or upgrades of existing projects, as all the rest have been.

Good letter on the permitting certainty controversy by many esteemed NGOs staffed by a lawyer or two, or three, or four, or five ...including my employer, @Public_Citizen , @Earthjustice and many more. Well explained.

When you think of the planning that went into this troll, and then combine that with absolutely FLAWLESS execution, this is arguably the greatest troll in the history of trolling.
Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

Set aside for a second the debate over BAJAA, and think about our politics writ large. We are in a climate emergency. Emissions must come down. And the best we can do legislatively is kill ourselves a little bit slower? What are we even doing? The system is completely broken.
RFF has power sector CO2 emissions -- which has been THE sources of progress in recent decades -- rising through 2040

You know what would have been great for American manufacturing investment? NOT repealing key policies that lowered taxes for the US solar, wind and EV sectors.
Wow this is interesting 👀. The @WhiteHouse official account is promoting a solar manufacturing facility being developed in Texas after Trump's visit to the state yesterday. Ken Paxton campaign account also promoting

👇This administration has been sabotaging domestic manufacturing, and then citing lack of domestic manufacturing as a reason to restrict wind and solar.

Yes. BAAJA almost certainly locks in Boundary Waters mining. Same with any mining exploration inside Bears Ears that Burgum rams through in the next two years.
A question for @SenatorHeinrich: If the Trump admin re-issues the Twin Metals/Boundary Water mineral leases in the coming days, and BAAJA passes shortly thereafter, will those leases be locked in in perpetuity?

I don’t see any significant direct upside for New York from the permitting deal. Only major downside. For example, NY is halting a large Williams fracked gas pipeline project (“Constitution”). BAAJA deals a mortal blow to that authority to protect NY’s water from pollution.

I don't agree with everything said here, but overall this is a smart analysis of BAAJA and what's really at issue with building transmission. Hint, it's not NEPA and the ESA. And guess what? Passing BAAJA does not mean utilities will actually build. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

Both lines go up and to the right. Up. This is bad for the climate and us. This means we’re still adding to the stock of CO2 in the atmosphere. Maybe the reason that Matt’s a fossil-fuel supporter is that he doesn’t understand climate science.
This chart shows BAAJA reducing emissions!!! The point, though, is that BAAJA is good for economic growth, good for affordability, and good for American national security. I might oppose it anyway if it was a huge disaster for climate but it clearly helps there a little too.

Let's be totally clear. No bullshit. @rff actually models that under @BAAJA, power-sector emissions will RISE. Any reducing of emissions is relative to an also-rising baseline. 1/2

It occurs to me that the climate vs. greens fight over #BAAJA (the Senate permitting bill) comes down to one question: Will the Trump administration implement it in good faith? Searchlight's defense and RFF’s early modeling both depend on the answer being 'yes'. 🧵: 1/
