This is a really cool article about how NYC’s steam heat systems, the one most older buildings have with the clanking radiators, actually work. I love the advertisement linked to within, with old gas tank like late great ones in Maspeth (once visible from the LIE), looming above.

This week the @NewStatesman takes a stand. Some of our most important writers and artists join with us in calling for Sally Rooney's books to be available.
In my view, this is indirect censorship. Here's my essay exploring the free speech issues involved:

Here's my @LRB piece about Ralph Ellison, not as novelist but as essayist + correspondent after Invisible Man during the decades he worked on his second novel (posthumously published in unfinished form), with thoughts from Saul Bellow, Irving Howe et al

Interesting piece by Danny on the affinities between Aron and Foucault. I suspect Aron would have found congenial Foucault’s rejection of the Sartrean notion of the “universal” intellectual (F advanced the notion of the “specific” intellectual in its place).
As tomorrow, October 15th, marks the centennial of Foucault’s birth, I thought I would write a little Substack post regarding his relationship with Raymond Aron: historyofnow.substack.com/p/…
