New: In a phone call with me after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed, President Trump suggested the US had added conditions late during talks.  “That sounds like me,” Trump responded, when asked about Canadian officials' assertion about US late-stage demands. When I pressed, “So you don't deny it?” The president replied, “No, no, I don't deny anything. So no, they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don't pay a fair amount, we won't make a deal. That's fine.“ More on the broader effects of tariffs here: cnn.com/2026/08/25/business/…

Politainment Noun. A blend of politics and entertainment. Traditionally seen as a comms or media strategy, now it’s firmly an electoral and governing strategy. It has been proven to work. Are you not entertained?

Whatever your feelings about the rate cut (too big, too small, just right?), this is good news.

“Queen's Park will be forced to rely mostly upon the CRA for help in determining who should receive cheques and where they can be mailed.” If you didn’t file a return, you probably won’t get a cheque. This was exactly the same with other provincial helicopter payments in 21/22

No you’re not. You’re an app. But not a news app. Some people post their news on you, while others post unverified and compacted bullshit. It’s like calling a running sewer the number one source of premium content in the city.

And the loss of Blaine Higgs should be a warning to culture warriors across Canada. Yes, polling showed support for 713, but it left voters feeling he was more focused on pronouns than healthcare. Holt had +15 lead over Higgs for "has the right priorities".

The vast majority of people in the world — over 96% — live in the country where they were born. Only a small minority are international migrants. International migrants are people who have lived in a country other than where they were born for more than one year. In contrast, natives live in the country where they were born. Since 1990, the absolute number of international migrants has risen sharply, but their share of the global population has remained relatively unchanged due to population growth.

Trump's economic plan is not more of the same or just a negotiating tactic. It will be implemented. And it will undermine US economic stability in ways the last time did not. Don't kid yourself or others. New from me in @ForeignAffairs A🧵 1/ foreignaffairs.com/united-st…

If I were a leader of a party who hadn’t been read in and briefed, I might be a little humble about getting over my skis to call “liar liar pants on fire” in case something might come to light later.

🗣️🎙️ #TheHerleBurly Greetings, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! A deep dive on the pod today into what’s become a political hot topic: #RetirementSecurity and #Pensions. The Bloc is threatening to trigger an early election over Bill C-319. A Bill that would raise Old Age Security payments for seniors between the ages of 65 and 74 by 10%. Today, I want to step back and examine the whole area from a policy perspective. And so, we’ve brought back the vaunted Herle Burly Policy Panel … @tylermeredith, @JenniferRobson8, and @Sean_Speer. Tyler is the former Head of Fiscal and Economic Policy for Prime Minister Trudeau and Ministers of Finance, Chrystia Freeland and Bill Morneau. Today, he’s a Founding Partner at Meredith/Boessenkool Policy Advisors. Jennifer has held senior roles in policy development and research with the Federal Government. She’s now Program Director and Associate Professor of Political Management at Carleton University. And Sean is a former senior economic advisor to Prime Minister Harper. Today, he’s Senior Fellow at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He’s also a Founder and Editor-at-Large at TheHub.ca. So, here’s a road map of what I hope to cover today: What’s the financial position of both current and soon-to-be retirees? How does an expanded CPP affect that? What was the government’s rationale for increasing OAS to only those over 75? What impact would the Bloc’s proposal have? How is the RRSP system working and how can we get more people saving earlier? And more! This speaks to me @ChantalHuinink I live in @ottawacity 18 months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to walk around my own block. Accessibility in Ottawa often = more time/effort (go further, wait longer) instead of real inclusion. Accessibility by design is good for all.

Late yesterday @Sean_Speer @JenniferRobson8 and I recorded a new @TheHerleBurly Policy Panel on seniors, pensions, the BQ’s OAS gamble and inter-gen fairness. A very nerdy topic with a very nerdy bunch. Catch it when out. (Ps we all hope our in-laws aren’t listening) #cdnpoli
