That fact that managers usually get paid more than devs implies they do more useful/valuable work than devs. However, devs can do highly productive work without a manager in sight, but managers can't work at all without devs. Maybe we should reverse the pay rates.

🧵Israelia syytetään kansanmurhasta, mut miten Hamas? 1/ Noin 3000 Hamas-taistelijaa tunkeutui Israeliin. Hamas tappoi 1139 henkilöä - 766 siviiliä (36 lasta) - 373 sotilasta, poliisia, vartijaa,… Haavoitti eri tasoisesti 3400 siviiliä ja sotilasta. 4 539 uhria.

Many companies have wonderful Core Values on the wall: - “Be Nice” - “Be Bold” - “Own It” But are packed with bad bosses and toxic culture. Why? The answer is Core Values suck. There’s a better way… 🧵

Ajatelkaa, jos Norja 70-luvulla olisi ollut pakotettu antamaan öljyvarantonsa ilmaiseksi pois öljyntuottajayhtiöille ilman ympäristöhaittojen ehkäisyn vaadetta. Ei olisi 1 500 miljardin (luit oikein) öljyrahastoa, eikä puhtaita vuonoja Norjassa. Näin useat Mepit aikovat kuitenkin huomenna äänestää EU:n Parlamentissa Suomen (EU:n ainoiden) akkuraaka-aineiden hyödyntämisen osalta. Koska EU:n huoltovarmuus. - Taustalla EU:n huoltovarmuusajattelu - Suomi kun on Euroopan ainoa maa, jonka maaperässä on kaikkia akkumetalleja - Eduskunnan Suuri valiokunta siunasi Komission ehdotuksen jo kesäkuussa - Nyt torstaina äänestys EU Parlamentissa Yhdysvalloissa kaivokset maksavat 21% veroa metallien arvosta, Norja verottaa öljyntuottajilta 78% tuotoista. Jopa kehitysmaissa raaka-aine vientiä verotetaan. Suomessa on 0,6% kaivosvero ja lisäksi annetaan sähkövero anteeksi… Maa-aines kuuluu kaikille Suomalaisille.
@AuraSalla @HennaVirkkunen @VilleNiinisto @EeroHeinaluoma @PekkarinenMauri @silviamodig @NilsTorvalds @PetaistoHelena

Scrum is a cancer. I've been writing software for 25 years, and nothing renders a software team useless like Scrum does. Some anecdotes: 1. They tried to convince me that Poker is a planning tool, not a game. 2. If you want to be more efficient, you must add process, not remove it. They had us attending the "ceremonies," a fancy name for a buttload of meetings: stand-ups, groomings, planning, retrospectives, and Scrum of Scrums. We spent more time talking than doing. 3. We prohibited laptops in meetings. We had to stand. We passed a ball around to keep everyone paying attention. 4. We spent more time estimating story points than writing software. Story points measure complexity, not time, but we had to decide how many story points fit in a sprint. 5. I had to use t-shirt sizes to estimate software. 6. We measured how much it cost to deliver one story point and then wrote contracts where clients paid for a package of "500 story points." 7. Management lost it when they found that 500 story points in one project weren't the same as 500 story points on another project. We had many meetings to fix this. 8. Imagine having a manager, a scrum master, a product owner, and a tech lead. You had to answer to all of them and none simultaneously. 9. We paid people who told us whether we were "burning down points" fast enough. Weren't story points about complexity instead of time? Never mind. I believe in Agile, but this ain't agile. We brought professional Scrum trainers. We paid people from our team to get certified. We tried Scrum this way and that other way. We spent years doing it. The result was always the same: It didn't work. Scrum is a cancer that will eat your development team. Scrum is not for developers; it's another tool for managers to feel they are in control. But the best about Scrum are those who look you in the eye and tell you: "If it doesn't work for you, you are doing it wrong. Scrum is anything that works for your team." Sure it is.

Shopify's product team has a neat framework for clarifying responsibilities on projects. It's called the AAA framework. Each team member is assigned one of three roles: 1. Aiming: responsible for strategy and direction of what we are building 2. Assembling: responsible for bringing the right people together and keeping them on track 3. Achieving: responsible for the day-to-day work of getting shit done (GSD) like design, code, etc. As @glencoates shared with me, "I think most companies think of hierarchy and jobs basically as this sort of single line of leadership downward, based on how senior you are. But a few years ago we introduced the AAA framework. You don’t want to take on a leadership job and suddenly be responsible for aiming when you’re really passionate about assembly, or the other way around. It’s helped us put people in the right roles and not just have one dimension of leadership that everyone has to conform to. On projects, it’s really good to be able to know who’s the aimer, responsible for the strategy. It may not be the most senior person in the room; it may be the staff designer or the staff engineer. It’s sometimes good to know that the team’s manager actually isn’t the aimer, which is by design. Then there’s usually dedicated product ops and program management people who are responsible for the assembly. And of course, the achievers, who actually do the work." Snowflake CEO explains how B players can tank your company. This is especially true for early-stage startups because founders (including me) get confused by: "they are not bad enough to fire." Except for compromising on actual outcomes, you are setting a culture of mediocrity.
