Future triple-weight king Barney Ross demolished Sammy Binder #OnThisDay in 1930, stopping him in Round 2 of a scheduled 6 at Chicago Stadium. The Chicago Tribune reported that the referee jumped in to halt the clash after Ross "crashed" through his opponent's defences and "had him helpless and reeling unprotected in the centre of the ring".

Former World Welterweight Champion Ted "Kid" Lewis won a six-round newspaper decision over Marcel Thomas in Jersey City #OnThisDay in 1920. Wright was the A-side when he signed a promotional deal in France, and that was 30 years ago. It’s not relevant to today’s landscape. If Feldman chooses to be the B-side, that’s a career-long choice to be “the opponent,” a status from which few fighters can ascend.

World Lightweight Champion Benny Leonard stopped Johnny Sheppard in Round 3 of a scheduled 12 at the 6th Regiment Armory in Paterson, New Jersey, #OnThisDay in 1920. The Paterson Evening News reported that Leonard gave a "marvelous" exhibition of boxing before dishing out a beatdown in the third stanza which left Sheppard "staggering" and "fleeing from his oppressor as a mouse seeks to avoid its pursuer". The referee stepped in to halt the clash and save the "all but out" and "doomed" Sheppard from being KO'd.

Former World Light Heavyweight Champion Battling Levinsky was arrested and charged with cheque fraud #OnThisDay in 1933. Levinsky was taken into custody by detectives in Philadelphia after cashing bogus cheques bearing the forged signatures of prominent local citizens. He insisted he was "absolutely innocent" and said he had been given the cheques, which he believed to be genuine, by patrons of his gymnasium as payment for health courses they were taking. Levinsky appeared in court before being bailed to await a future hearing. The allegations against him would later be dropped after local banks reportedly indicated that they didn't want him to be prosecuted.

Leonard was 25. He was also an Olympic gold medalist and the the face of boxing. And that was 45 years ago. Boxing has changed. There are fewer shows now. If you don’t have a big promoter behind you and want to be the A side, it’s going to be very expensive to fight that often.

A legend returns... Former World Lightweight Champion Benny Leonard left retirement and stepped into the ring for the first time in seven years #OnThisDay in 1931. "The Ghetto Wizard" made short work of Pal Silvers, flattening his opponent in Round 2 of a scheduled 10 and securing a TKO win in front of around 16,000 fans at Queensboro Stadium in Long Island City, New York. The crowd were unimpressed - the victory was greeted by booing amid suspicions Silvers may have taken a dive.
