“Teach the stuff and cut the fluff!” ~Dr. Anita Archer
Very wise words BUT I think this advice should apply to more than just classroom instruction- it should apply to teacher professional learning, too!!
That’s one of the reasons why I love the researchED Canada conference so much! I truly learn more in one day at a researchED conference than I learn in an entire year of district-wide professional development.
Why? Because the focus is on bringing in education experts and leading researchers in the areas of cognitive science, literacy, mathematics and evidence-informed instruction, and not on creating an elaborate venue complete with expensive frills!
A fancy conference venue, white linen tablecloths and a 3-course meal do not help me become a better teacher-access to knowledge, empirical research and practical instructional strategies does.
If we genuinely believe that every student deserves a knowledgeable, well-trained teacher, shouldn’t we be working to make high-quality professional learning affordable and accessible to EVERY teacher?
Teachers shouldn’t have to spend hundreds—or thousands—of dollars out of pocket to access the knowledge they need to improve student outcomes- Professional learning shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for those who can afford it!!
So perhaps it’s time we applied Anita Archer’s advice to teacher training and conferences, too:
TEACH THE STUFF. CUT THE FLUFF.
Because ultimately, the measure of a successful conference isn’t how impressive the venue was or how inspired teachers felt when they left.
It’s what teachers learned, what they changed in their classrooms, and whether those changes improved student learning.
Thank you @nsachdeva2019 and @researchEDCan, as well as @tombennett71 at @researchED1 for continuing to prioritize substance over spectacle. You are leading the way for affordable, high quality conferences for educators across Canada and the world! #TeacherTraining #AnitaArcher #TeachTheStuffAndCutTheFluff

“With targeted early intervention in Grade 1, we can remove a dyslexic child’s designation of dyslexia.”🎤
Shouldn’t this be EVERY school districts goal?? Instead of waiting until they’re in grade 3 for an assessment, a year later for a Tier 3 intervention program like Empower, which is not enough to close the gaps that have been allowed to widen over 4,5,6 years and then thrown back into the classroom without the supports that allowed them to be successful.
Very inspiring presentation from @CunninghamPsych at the @researchEDCan today! A good reminder of what so many teachers already know- waiting doesn’t work!!!!

Now that the Jays season is over, I want to say a huge thank you to them.
THANK YOU @BlueJays 💙 Thank you for 50 years of amazing ball!
I went back to watching baseball this season after many years. I watched as many games as possible. I even went to 5 of them 😊
Their season was full of injuries, but they still came out every game and gave it their all. They truly are Canada's team 🇨🇦💙
The wild card race was a close call, but, sadly, they just couldn't do it 😥
Even though they didn't make the playoffs this year, they still made me proud and always will.
I will always love the Toronto Blue Jays 💙
Get some much deserved rest, boys, and let's make 2027 our year 💙🤞💙

I would rather see all the effective classroom instruction that Sean Morrisey engages in become the national trend--that, I believe, is what will move the needle for students.

True but you need to appreciate what a teacher this excited and motivated and attentive to the details provides — it is everything. When the culture is “what book are you reading” in 5th grade vs what else our culture is enticing them towards? We can never appreciate teachers like this enough

We actually do know how to remediate, it's just that schools and school districts don't want to dedicate the resources to make it happen. It is far more cost-effective in the short term just to water things down, inflate grades, and pass kids along.
Here’s an ugly truth about American education:
We literally do not know how to reliably remediate students who fall behind. At best we have theories.
But the reality is that if a kid falls behind in third grade or sixth grade, we are very likely just going to push them through all the way to graduation without ever catching up, or even learning much.
You should read @tombennett71 's book "Running the Room". Most educators have been saying this for a long time. It's the outside community that's just catching up!

That people outside of education are having an easy time answering this question is a moral indictment of the ideology which has taken over our schools.
Why do educators have more concern for the bad kids than the good ones?

I agree. It feels counterintuitive but rather than research coming down from academia into practice, academics are increasingly having to look at schools to see what evidence informed instruction actually looks like.
