Can terrain, deep learning and climate data together “discover” Austria’s ecoregions without labels?

We sampled 5,175 DEM patches across Austria, built one fused feature set, and applied unsupervised clustering to identify ecoregional units.
Result: DEM features + climate give clusters that are robust by internal validity indices AND spatially meaningful compared with known ecoregions.
Learned features complement domain knowledge rather than replace it.

What an incredible week at the 29th AGILE Conference on Geographic Information Science — “Smart Data: Making Geospatial Data Actionable.” The energy, the ideas, and the community in beautiful Tartu were outstanding.

I recognized the stark difference between EU and the US during my research visit to UCSB in 2016. Additionally, bureaucracy makes life hard in AI. Things are fine as long as you do research, but when you step into business you are legally in another world thanks to the AI act.
In der USA sind die meisten Menschen enthusiastisch.
In Europa werde ich beschimpft, Leute schreien REGULIERUNG und VERANTWORTUNG.
Und wenn ich wirklich hier eine Firma baue dann kann ich mich mit Themen wie Investitionsschutzgesetz, Mitarbeiterbeteiligung und lähmenden Arbeitsregulierungen abkämpfen. Bei OAI arbeiten die meisten Leute 6-7 Tage die Woche und werden depentsprechend bezahlt. Be uns ist das illegal.
