The independence of the judiciary is vital to the rule of law. Judges, by the nature of their role, cannot respond to personal criticism as politicians often can.
That makes it especially important that public debate, however robust, is conducted in a way that remains fair and respectful.

Noticeably Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes not benefiting from mayoral devolution governance through the failure of council leaders to agree.

Excited to hear the ChEx announce a ring-fencing of preventative spending in the next Spending Review. I've been arguing for this for 15 years, and call for it my book Bad Government as part of rewiring the Treasury toward prevention and investment in the longer-term..🧵

I am delighted that a new Luton Neighbourhood Watch scheme is being launched this evening.
Working with the police and local authority, this community initiative will be the eyes and ears for residents and businesses across Luton. It will help prevent crime and support tackling crimes.
It is a fine example of community activism.
My thanks to everyone involved in this new venture.

🚨 There's nothing low-level about antisocial behaviour.
From today, Respect Orders will give police and councils stronger powers to tackle it.
Courts can now ban adult offenders from related behaviour – like public drinking on a high street.
We're making communities safer.

From today, new #RespectOrders are implemented. This coincides with the launch of the @PoliceChiefs Safer Town Centres Spotlight, which we are delighted to support.
APCC Leads for Local Policing, Matt Storey and Chris Nelson have issued a statement welcoming the launch of both 👇

We're recruiting an Independent Member to join the Joint Audit Committee supporting governance, accountability and ethical standards across policing in Bedfordshire.
As women are currently under-represented on the Committee, we particularly encourage applications from women.

Good morning, John @JohnTizard & thank you, as always. The #clocksgoback always seem to cause chaos in our household! With #StormBoelo in the news today, here's one which might be appropriate: "Storm, Lyme Regis" by John Cooper from 1934. #JohnCooper #LymeRegis #EastLondonGroup

EU Freedom of Movement is NOT an unconditional right under EU law: it is conditional on finding a job or being self-sufficient i.e. not being a burden on taxpayers. Otherwise they have no right to stay.
