To clear up the school funding argument (thread). There is no more money and nothing has changed. *However*, up to now govt statements on affordability have been based on the Schools Costs Technical Note, published in March. 1/6

Only the NEU is wrong - either they think they've achieved something or they think no-one will notice they're claiming something false. Poor either way. 5/6

What is intriguing is that it looks like govt hadn't noticed their SCTN assumptions had been superseded when they made the pay award/pay grant announcement. If that's so, then the pay grant is more generous than they intended (through their own error...)

It's an important announcement. The country has for a long time needed a stronger vocational pathway. Sure - there is a lot to get right, there are past mistakes to learn from, risks to avoid. It'll take detailed thought, hard work and time. But it's needed and do-able.

Today was a sad day at @totteridgeacad as we said goodbye to our Principal, Chris Fairbairn. Chris has been a presence in my life since I joined seven years ago, and it's difficult to overstate what an inspiration he has been to me personally and professionally. Chris is the antidote to a lot of the things that worry me about education. Where others talk a good game and have no track record to back it up, Chris has close to no online or public presence. He doesn't do keynotes, panels, blogs, podcasts, interviews or anything. You've probably never heard of him, but you should have. Why: Ten years ago, Chris and his team took over The Totteridge Academy. At the time, it had the worst outcomes in the borough. It was half empty because nobody wanted to be there. Its sixth form had closed. The building was crumbling and uninspiring. It was about as close to rock-bottom as a school can get. Now, ten years on, it's completely transformed. The school is full and there are hundreds of children on the waiting list. Behaviour is excellent. Results place us in the top 20 in the country. The sixth form has reopened, and staff are happy. Ofsted awarded us - a turnaround! - five exceptionals and two strong standards. We host hundreds of visitors a year who come to learn from the school. It is a joyous place to work. There are many things I could say about Chris's leadership, but to pick just one: a few years ago as our roll increased, the % of students on free school meals decreased accordingly. Chris didn't want that, and wrote new admissions policies that prioritise the most disadvantaged students. This move, almost guaranteed to reduce headline metrics, showed that it's possible to do turnarounds inclusively and with a deep sense of humanity and justice. I visit a LOT of schools. I'm lucky in that. I see a lot of places and talk to a lot of people, and I can say with confidence: Chris and his team have built the best school in the country. It's been an honour and a privilege to work for him.

1/3 So... DfE say today: governors of big maintained school in IL can pay Head up to £198k - or *any* higher sum 'in exceptional circumstances' without need for anyone else's consent. But Academy trust must get DfE permission to pay £175k to that Head or to a regional director...

2/3... who oversees 6 schools of that size. Hard to see that as anything other than an attack on trusts. Attracting and employing the best leaders is key to turning schools round. Fortunately, DfE do not have the powers to do what they have proposed so it will be challenged.

3/3 It's just a huge shame that in their approach to making policy, the new government hasn't chosen to work with the sector, consult or collaborate, but instead uninformed officials cook up bad ideas in secret and try to impose them.

This is so important. Ofsted find that there are no concerns about Bristol Brunel Academy. Will the people who attacked them without knowing the facts now apologise?
The decision at Ofsted and the DfE to speak about this inspection in a negative light to the school before it started was deeply unprofessional and looks even worse now. The trust-wide review still being pushed despite the findings is very problematic tes.com/magazine/news/genera…

Thread: In public service reform, the thing that is most often needed - but scarcely ever provided when governments get involved - is rational, evidence-based action with a 'continuous improvement' mindset. Making better what is working and changing what isn't. 1/

The piece by @michaelgove in @thetimes today is characteristically well written and I'm with him at one quarter distance. But his arguments about citizenship, grammar tests and EBacc don't stack up.

But we're only at 40% uptake of the full suite of subjects because the EBacc measure has failed to do anything to arrest the decline in languages - where comparing ourselves to other countries, standards as well as uptake remain woeful. We now need another approach.

And in relation to climate change, @michealgove actually agrees with the Review - improved scientific understanding is exactly what it advocates. Article here: Planned school reforms will widen attainment gap
