It would be much better if we just called pentagons and hexagons fivecorners and sixcorners like the Germans. Why should maths or science be a Greek lesson in disguise?

This of course has nothing to do with Birmingham’s recent productivity struggles.
The decline of the British car industry came in two Brexit stages. 1. Uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry 2. Trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did lasting damage. ukandeu.ac.uk/from-pace-sett…

I see jackdaw is managing to have no impact on anything while simultaneously contributing hugely to the climate crisis.

I wish people would stop talking so much about growf. What this country needs is a reassertion of the “th” sound.

If you go back to 1900 or so, the average Black Country worker was Methodist, relatively unskilled a trade union member, voted for the emerging Labour Party and worked for a big enterprise in coal or basic metal production with no chance of him becoming an owner. In contrast….

The average Brummie was a relatively skilled Anglican, wouldn’t go near a trade union, voted liberal unionist and worked for a small artisan or engineering business, maybe hoping one day to become a “master” himself. No other UK conurbation has such strongly diverging histories

Of all the Americanisms that have entered our language and I’ve hated over my lifetime, and there are many, the recent adoption of “Anglo” is a particular low point

Just met up with a few friends from school and wandered round a few pubs in Marylebone and Fitzrovia. I mean, I love going out in Manchester and am very fond of Birmingham, but seriously, there is just no comparison in terms of what I can only call urban depth.
