We are off to a great year at @Ashland_Univ! I shared updates with WMFD, including a historic $20 million donation from alum Dwight Schar to modernize our student housing. Thanks to Aaron Hines for a great interview.
What's happening at AU? Let President Dr. Jon Parrish Peede tell you. He sat down with WMFD for an in-depth interview, discussing everything from residence hall renovations and the Honors Program to academic rankings, athletics and student opportunities.

This week, our students placed flags on campus in remembrance of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Each flag serves as a reminder to honor, reflect and remember.
We will never forget.
Wendell Berry’s greatest legacy will be his Agrarian essays & poetry. I had the pleasure of discussing his work w/ him at the KY Book Festival. Berry was shy about his work that day before a packed audience. Here’s the interview w/ him and Morris Grubbs. on.soundcloud.com/dgQtoCmjQh…

"No one in the history of Stanford Business School graduated doing less work than I did."
Dana Gioia got his MBA from Stanford, but his heart was set on writing. Years later, one rule let him turn his writing dreams into a reality:
"I spent three to four hours every day reading and writing for literary things. I achieved three things at Stanford: for two years, I was publishing at least one piece a week. Secondly, I got my MBA. And most importantly, I met my wife."
"Think of your day as a wallet full of one-hour bills. I'm going to take this hour, this hour, that. And you only have twenty-four hours to spend every day."
"I had three important things in my life. I had my marriage and my family. I had my job, which I had to have because I had no money. And the third thing was the writing. I could do all three, but I couldn't have added a fourth. Almost every hour of every day was budgeted."
"I was totally disciplined. So I quit my job at one point and became a literary journalist. We nearly went bankrupt for about two years, and then basically it all started working."
Happy July 4th from our house to yours! What a joyful day in Ashland, Ohio, to reflect on “We the people” and our civic duties to one another and to our Republic.

On June 6, 1944, a 56-year-old general with a secret walked onto Utah Beach under fire, armed with a cane and a pistol.
The secret: his heart was failing. He had hidden it from the army doctors so they wouldn't pull him from the mission.
His name was Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Son of the President. He had begged three separate times to lead the first wave ashore at Normandy before his commanders finally said yes.
When his landing craft drifted 2,000 yards off course, every instinct said redirect the following waves to the correct zone. Instead, Roosevelt walked the beach himself, alone, under artillery fire, cane in hand, reading the terrain.
His verdict: "We'll start the war from right here."
He then stood on that beach and personally greeted every regiment that landed after him, pointing them inland, cracking jokes under shellfire, steadying 18-year-olds who had never seen combat. He did this for hours.
Years later, Omar Bradley was asked to name the single most heroic act he had ever witnessed in combat.
His answer, without hesitation: "Ted Roosevelt on Utah Beach."
Roosevelt's son, Captain Quentin Roosevelt II, also landed at Normandy that same morning. He was named after his uncle, Quentin Roosevelt, who had been shot down as a fighter pilot over France in World War I.
Three generations. Three wars. One family.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. died in his sleep 36 days later. Heart attack. The thing he had been hiding finally won. He never learned he had been awarded the Medal of Honor.
He was buried at the Normandy American Cemetery.
In 1955, his family had his brother Quentin, killed in WWI, exhumed from where he fell in France and reinterred right beside him. Quentin is the only World War I soldier buried there.
Two brothers. Two world wars. The same French soil.
Their father had once said: "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
Both of his sons did exactly that.

I don’t think people have fully absorbed just how big the declines in student enrollment are going to be.
Eight states are projected to experience DOUBLE DIGIT declines by 2031.

Been rereading Delbanco’s magnificent biography of Melville, specifically the chapters about the composition of MOBY-DICK. Melville’s close friendship with Hawthorne, his move to the farmhouse in Pittsfield, MA, and his discovery of Shakespeare seem to’ve transformed his writing.
