I’ve really enjoyed working with @Carl_Portman to publish this book. But then, I’ve always preferred & tried to publish books which have some human interest and aren’t just dry analysis. Excited to be releasing another chess title through @steelcity_press after a bit of a break.
On Monday we’re publishing Never Mind The Grandmasters by @Carl_Portman. From a Poirot-inspired chess mystery to a chat with Karpov about prisons, via Alekhine’s grave, the book captivates both on and off the 64 squares. Foreword by @gmmds. Pre-order: steelcitypress.co.uk/product…

In France, the “far-left” achieved 25.8% of the vote, 180 seats. The “far-right” 37.1% of the vote, 142 seats. The “centrists” 24.5% of the vote, 159 seats. New Prime Minister’s party: 5.4% of the vote, 39 seats. Concerning.

If you lionise ULEZ opponents’ vandalism, you lose the moral right to demonise Just Stop Oil’s vandalism. And vice versa. Hypocrites - Left and Right - hold contradictory views of thuggish behaviour based on whether or not they happen to agree with the cause.

Can both be true at once? T20 (and the dreaded Hundred) revolutionised cricket’s image through theatrical modernisation. Yet Test cricket has thrived. Could a modern fast-paced chess product be a gateway drug to the thoughtful, beautiful, traditional game?
No. Much is lost in the name of modernisation. Chess has to be more than breathless excitement and frenetic hand movement. The game is truest to itself when it’s slow, silent, thoughtful, deep and beautiful. Let’s allow it to stay that way.

So many defaults in that round, but to do that to someone needing one result for a norm…unthinkable.
Priyanka Nutakki's opponent didn't show, so she won't get a norm chance after all. 😔 chess-results.com/tnr759264.… #chess #womeninchess

This thread is so Twitter/X. An authority figure (International Arbiter) posts the definitive answer in the thread, quoting the actual Law, yet debate continues.
A regular contributor has been very bothered by the way Praggnanandhaa has been promoting to a Queen in the World cup. He doesn't push the pawn to the Queening square but takes a Queen places it on the Queening square and then removes the pawn. Anyone else think this is wrong?

A whole-life tariff in a UK prison may seem trifling for the sadistic evil of Lucy Letby; the suffering and death inflicted on so many families. Yet if we had the death penalty, a jury might have been scared to convict in a complex case. A vile murderer could have walked free.

Had that situation a few times when we were doing commentaries for the hospital radio. At least you had 5G!
Seen a few comments about our @SUFCOfficial commentary today & wanted to let fans/listeners know the situation. With the Iron in NLN, the majority of clubs don’t have ISDN facilities which is what the majority of PL/EFL clubs still have at the moment for stations to…(1/5)

🧵 These arguments (probably) don’t stand up to scrutiny. First, changing 30mph speed limits to 20mph tends to reduce median traffic speeds by less than 1mph on average. Either traffic is already going at 20, or it doesn’t slow down much just because a sign is put up.
People are crapping all over the plans to change Wales' speed limits to 20mph instead of 30mph. There is a lot of noise about it but having looked at the evidence I believe this is actually a really good bit of policy. Let me explain. [Thread]

🧵Society has (rightly) cherry-picked areas where a 20mph zone with calming might reduce accidents. But it’s a classic example of how skewed data cannot provide a clear case for a blanket policy. 20mph limits *may* reduce accidents in specific situations, but not universally.

🧵There are ‘good’ 20mph limits. There are also ‘bad’ ones, and a catch-all policy will create more ‘bad’ ones than good, especially if they’re not shelling out for bespoke traffic calming measures on every Welsh residential street. /ends
