The strain from this outbreak has now been confirmed as meningitis B. This isn't in the current UK teenage vaccine schedule (perhaps that will now change...) theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…
Dear students in the UK, if you haven't had your teenage meningitis vaccine or aren't sure if you have had it, PLEASE arrange with your GP to get vaccinated nhs.uk/vaccinations/menacwy-… It helps prevent tragic deaths like those that have occured recently in Kent.

Thanks Andrew, the news that BBCWS plan to cut Science in Action, alongside a load of other programmes to meet savings targets, came as a massive shock. Only last month the head of WSEnglish was telling us to keep doing what we do, and how important the programme is to WS output

Vaccine hesitancy is a serious problem. Talking about vaccines in general terms, is an oversimplification. It is good to address concerns of citizens, but that should be evidence based. I am seeing the weirdest stories on this platform politico.com/news/2025/01/24…

In case you are interested in just how long children have been constantly catching infections: how about *over* 30,000 years? biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… Your child is catching the same package of DNA viruses as your mammoth-hunting ancestors.
Replying to @DrCJ_Houldcroft
Once you add in all the potentially rash-causing DNA viruses that a child will catch before age 5 (eg VZV, HHV6A and B, HHV7), and the ones that can cause a sore throat (EBV, CMV), never mind the polyomas... And the rash causing RNA viruses (hand, foot and mouth)...
