Mechanical Thrombectomy 24 to 72 Hours after Large-Vessel Ischemic Stroke: @NEJM
🥸 Advances in neuro-interventions: LATE-MT trial
😱Summary
👇👇👇
Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026, describes the science behind a study of intravitreal delivery of an AAV vector encoding a light-gated ion channel in 10 blind patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa.
Read the editorial “Optogenetics in Sight”: nej.md/476T5x1

ALT An illustrated diagram from the editorial "Science behind the Study: Optogenetics in Sight" that shows direct and indirect translational optogenetics pathways. Panel A: Precise identification of causal cells and circuits allows principled targeting, whether through direct (left), indirect neuromodulatory (middle), or indirect medicinal (right) approaches. Panel B: Components of direct optogenetics for retinitis pigmentosa are shown, including the adeno-associated virus (AAV) (top), the light-projecting goggles (middle), and the channelrhodopsin protein (bottom). The NEJM identity sits at the bottom.

2026 #NobelPrize laureate in physiology or medicine Karl Deisseroth was born in 1971.
He received his Ph.D. and MD from @Stanford University, USA. He is currently D.H. Chen Professor, Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, USA.

People are all over the place on whether or not to treat MVO strokes.
Here is a nice study showing benefit with EVR.
Although this single paper may not sway practice immediately, it will help the inevitable progression towards treating MVO strokes with intervention. The main impetus for this will be the continued expansion of thrombectomy capable centers — and further proliferation of Neuro endovascular specialists.

Could targeting the middle meningeal artery help reduce headache and opioid use after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage?
In this JNIS pilot study, MMA infusion of lidocaine ± dexamethasone during aneurysm embolization was associated with reduced pain burden, lower opioid use, and no complications in patients with low-grade aSAH.

Liftoff.
The Artemis II mission launched from @NASAKennedy at 6:35pm ET (2235 UTC), propelling four astronauts on a journey around the Moon.
Artemis II will pave the way for future Moon landings, as well as the next giant leap — astronauts on Mars.
