78% of constituency staff have had threatening calls or messages. Half of MPs’ staff now meet the threshold for psychological distress.
No one is responsible for their safety across Parliament. One Parliament, One Employer would change that. #1P1E

With rising abuse aimed at MPs, it does feel scary to work in politics.
My MP is great and makes sure we’re all looked after - but that may not be a universal experience.
I back @GMB_MPs_Staff’s One Parliament One Employer campaign for this reason!

Honestly at times, what I see & deal with at work makes me rethink my career choices.
Luckily, my office really cares about each other, but I know this isn't universal. Its why @GMB_MPs_Staff campaign for One Parliament, One Employer is so important

Absolute legend of a man, and one of my favourite actors in so many things.
One of my proudest moments in my career was working with Sir Patrick when he endorsed @TracyBrabin when she was elected Mayor in 2021, which was an amazing experience. RIP to an absolute legend of a man

MPs’ offices have changed, but the way staff are employed has not.
@GMB_union is calling on MPs to support their One Parliament One Employer campaign for a single, central employer for Parliament.

My Budget today will help families with the pressures they face now.
It will back businesses and entrepreneurs, invest in Britain's future, and strengthen our national security.
A plan to get through this moment and build a stronger Britain.

Hahahahah marginal tax rate of 57% god the system is broken for graduates
Most tax calculators tell you how much tax you pay *now*. Ours also shows how much tax you'll pay on your next £1. Your marginal rate.
We'll be publishing straight after the Budget. But here's a preview - I'd love to get feedback.

The list sent by Harold Wilson to his cabinet of “little things that mean a lot”, including the protection of pubs, concessionary fares for the elderly, empty office blocks and “the future of the pint”.
Echoes of this in Burnham’s small but popular policies today.
Jokes on you - I’ve read their insane stuff before.
I promise, you are not prepared for the first paragraph of this Real Madrid statement

When I met Angela Rayner to campaign for change to overly aggressive council tax debt collection, with its unprecedented rapid escalation to balliffs, she nodded like most politicians do.
I explained it was destructive for individuals, councils and the economy. She listened more then said she'd change it. I was sceptical. Yet a consultation was launched within weeks and delightfully the change announced within 18mths (its in place from next April) - bullet train pace for politics.
I've a rule that if I campaign for a politician (of any party) to do something, and they do it, I say thank you. Its important to recognise it. So thank you so much Angela Rayner for listening and more importantly acting. The changes coming are a great start.
I promised we'd make council tax fairer, and I’m getting on with the job.
Too many working people have seen council tax debt spiral before they had the chance to get help.
That's why we're introducing more time to pay, clearer warnings if you miss a payment and more support from councils.
Thanks to @MartinSLewis and @mmhpi for their tireless campaigning to make this change happen.

Absolutely devastating news. Pat was an absolute legend and always had a good bit of advice for anyone who wanted it.
Thoughts are with his family and the entire @McrLabour family
RIP Councillor Pat Karney.
In 2006, when I came up with the idea of The Warehouse Project, it was laughed off.
Pat believed in it and helped it happen.
A visionary. A pioneer. A true Mancunian.

I love that he cannot help but bring a football analogy in. My Prime Minister
NON COMPETES BANNED
Today, the PM has announced that his Government will legislate to functionally ban non-compete agreements for startups and scaleups in the UK or as he called it - the Bosman ruling for ruling for the innovation sector' 😂
At the @StartupCltn been working on this for months and we think it’s a huge potential unlock for our tech ecosystem.
Here’s what you need to know…
- Measures to functionally ban non-competes for startups and scaleups in the UK are going to be set out.
- There will also be consultation on a wider set of restrictive practices including gardening leave.
- More detail on these plans at the budget in a few weeks (Wednesday 28th October) including a timetable for consultation with a view to legislation in the coming months.
We think this is a huge move and so do lots of friends including so many of the great founders that signed the letter with Inherent just the other week.
Why? Because talent matters and mobile talent means startups can build. The Valley was built on free-flowing talent. In the UK, we’re now seeing our own versions of this story with companies being built from alumni of both homegrown firms like Revolut and beyond. But we need that to move faster. Hiring and building faster means British startups and scaleups can grow faster. Barriers to that slow our ecosystem down.
We won’t pretend it will be perfect, and people (including some of our friends but also lots of fairly vested interests too) will have a right to disagree. But we think that startups will thrive and win in a faster paced Britain.
So we are delighted with the progress today - as part of a strong speech by the PM outlining his ambition for building the world’s leading innovation nation including more on tax, growing companies outside London and more. But this is the start, not the end of the process. The announcement launches a consultation. It doesn't mean the issue is settled. How far reform goes, and what it looks like on the ground, is still to be decided.
The Prime Minister today has done something that can materially impact the trajectory of the UK tech ecosystem and with it our economy - but only if we make sure it’s delivered. So, the real work starts now.
