HOW TO BUILD AN EFFICIENT HIGH SCHOOL/AAU GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
It isn't about having the fastest, strongest, tallest players (though it helps!)
It's about math.
Here is my blueprint: a model built on pace, space, and probability. 🧵👇

The future (of basketball coaching) is now.
Reads. Decisions. Live play. As much as possible.

A lesson every recruit needs to hear, from Shane Battier on his podcast Glue Guys with Duke's Jon Scheyer:
When you decide against a school that recruited you, don't just send a text and go silent. Pick up the phone to call & thank the coach. Tell them what their interest meant to you, even though you're going elsewhere.
Battier did exactly this as a senior, calling Tom Izzo, Steve Fisher, Roy Williams, and Dean Smith individually. Decades later, Izzo still thanks him for that call & he even had his own son do the same thing recently when cutting his college list.
It's an uncomfortable conversation at 17 or 18 years old. But it builds a reputation that follows you for the rest of your career.

I’m so excited to announce that I am committing to the United States Air Force Academy.
First, I want to thank Coach McIntyre, Brooks, Lo, and Mackenzie for believing in me, by inviting me to be part of the Air Force family. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my country and pursue something bigger than myself, while continuing to play basketball.
I’ll be attending the Air Force Academy Preparatory School for my first year of the five-year journey.
God, thank you for guiding me and giving me the strength and faith to get to where I am today.
Mom, Dad, and Landon, thank you doesn’t even begin to cover everything you’ve done for me. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.
Coach Josh and Coach Anthony, thank you for pushing me to compete every day and helping me grow throughout my AAU career. I’m so thankful for your investment in me and for always challenging me to get better.
Coach Wruble and Coach Whitfield, thank you for trusting me, believing in me throughout my high school career, and for always holding me to a higher standard.
Coach G and Coach Kenny, thank you for the countless hours you’ve spent training me. Whether it was fixing the little things or helping me become more confident in my game, you both played a huge role in getting me ready for the next level.
Brittany and Jill, thank you for helping me through the recruiting process from the behind-the-scenes work to all the conversations and decisions, I truly appreciate your assistance.
I’m so excited to start this next chapter, and can’t wait to grow on the court, in the classroom, and as a future officer while serving my country.
Go Falcons! 💙

We tell young people in our society that end of the rainbow is retirement at 65.
We ought to tell them that "there is going to be this short but beautiful golden window from roughly age 3 to roughly age 12 where your kids are not only easy (comparatively to bottles & diapers), but are going to be these beautiful little creatures and it will pain your heart to be away from them for too long. So, prepare in your 20's, financially and career wise, to build that flexibility into that chapter of your life".
You don't get another shot at living the "golden window". And, for me, leaning hard into that golden window has made everything else in my life feel fairly insignificant in comparison. I have made plenty of mistakes as a father, but what I won't have is the regret of having been distracted and absent from these formative years. In some cases, that has required financial sacrifices (declining a particular career opportunity that would have required relocation), but I personally have zero regrets.
I also hear from some ambitious & successful people with a 4 year old that say "I've lost my ambition, I am so immersed in fatherhood". At least for me, and a number of my friends, it comes back. You can't keep an ambitious person down and if you have the fire, hanging at a playground on too many Tuesday afternoons is going to feel like torture after too long.
My three boys are approaching 13, 11 & 9, and it's much different than 7, 5 & 3. This summer, for example, they slept until 11am and I hard an unencumbered 6am-12pm to work (being on PT helps), then got another great window 7-11pm, but was able to be present in the heart of the day, then weeks when they were at basketball camp, etc. It gets easier, your time frees up again (there's a sadness to that too), but I'm back to working as intensely as I did pre-kids just because my day to day presence requires fewer hours than it did before (also, my wife is just superbly wonderful). And that is the beautiful gift of entrepreneurship (or at least my sort of business), the ability to deliver still a high level of output but work that around your life rather than the opposite.
TLDR, grind before, and grind after. Prepare for the golden window.

Still remember Olivia Miles trainer used to post clips from pick-up back in the day ... she developed by playing so much unstructured hoop, even 2s/3s/4s, rare in WBB, but also in general now, w/ so much focus on individual training
Part of why her game is so unique IMO

MORE THAN SCORING
“The amount of points you score doesn’t determine whether you are playing good or bad. Your point total is never an indicator of how you play. It’s how hard you work and how good of a teammate you are.” (Caitlin Clark)

It’s Saturday. Many parents spent most of today taking their kids to sporting events. Jackson Prince explains how today’s youth sports culture undermines teen’s self-image, reduces identity to performance, & how sports narrows their life experience creating an identity crisis.

This type of training is what we call Differential Learning (DL). Using DL for warm-ups is a highly effective strategy, as it “opens up” a player’s system degrees of freedom. It can also be an excellent tool for light training days, especially for recovery, helping players restore a wide range of movement solutions post-competition.
When performing DL activities, we want to encourage as much variability as possible. A shooter may shoot out of different stances (e.g., feet wide, feet narrow, staggered, one leg), with different release speeds, varying arc heights, etc. There are an endless number of ways to do this. As the shooter performs their DL tasks, they should continually change their range and location (even if this means taking one or two steps between every shot). The passer should also pass from different angles, from different locations, and with varying velocities and spins.

Dominoes offense is the future.
🔑 Zero-second decisions
🔑 1 can’t guard 2
🔑 The floor is lava
Basketball is becoming less about actions…
and more about how quickly you can create and maintain an advantage to hunt a GREAT shot.
The best offenses don’t let the defense reset.
They keep tipping the next domino.

Taking the April Eval period with an experienced grain of salt, but I’m going to encourage these clubs to develop some sort of system for which players can start displaying better decision making. TEAMS develop a common language and some operational standards - and it helps everyone be better. They need the accountability and foundation. Teach them! And players - don’t run away from the coaches who challenge you in this way, please.
But - this I’ll stand on: the free-for-all is not benefitting anyone. And “pressing” does not qualify as a system.

The ability to catch and stick! Shoulders square, feet pointing to the target, ball immediately in the shooting pocket high and let it fly! Trainers should have no dribbling sessions, get open without the ball and shoot without putting ball on the floor!@TNTSportsUS
