For this #PSPWednesday, I’ve got 2005’s Pursuit Force, an exhilarating mix of shootouts and high-speed chases where you leap between cars, motorcycles, boats and helicopters to engage heavily armed gangs. Race and time trial modes are included along with a gallery of unlockables.

Until recently I hadn’t even realized that Pepsi Lemon Big Zero was a thing in Japan. Just got some to try and it’s not bad. I at least like it better than regular Pepsi, but being more of a Coca-Cola guy (Diet Coke or Coke Zero Sugar preferably), that’s not really saying much.🍋

It’s the 41st Anniversary of the NES and I made an NES dress! 🥳 Redesigned from Nintendo’s 1983 Famicom, the NES hit U.S. test markets on October 18, 1985. Nintendo brilliantly outsmarted the US retail market to get the NES into stores with R.O.B., this little Robotic Operating Buddy that I’m holding here! 🤖 Following the video game crash of 1983, which resulted in declining sales and slashed prices of home consoles like Atari, Intellivision, ColecoVision, and Fairchild, retailers were hesitant to embrace home video game systems. Nintendo knew they had a hit on their hands with the Famicom and wanted to bring it West. To do so, they needed to pry their way back into the US market. Part of the plan was redesigning the console to resemble a front-loading VCR, which was incredibly popular in the West. Another component was marketing the NES as an “Entertainment System” rather than just a video game system. R.O.B., a robot who “played” games alongside players, was key to that plan and was sold individually or alongside the NES in Deluxe Sets with the original gray Zapper. (I have the blaze-orange Zapper and Action Set from 1989, pictured here! ❤️) Interest in robots was high in the mid-1980s, thanks in part to cartoons like Transformers and the growing popularity of robots in movies and toys. Although there were only two compatible R.O.B. games, Gyromite and Stack-Up (not Mario, though that’s on screen here 🤭), his novelty helped convince reluctant retailers to open their doors to Nintendo. The initial 17-game lineup included: 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan’s Alley, Ice Climber, Kung-Fu Master, Pinball, Soccer, Stack-Up, Super Mario Bros., Tennis, Wild Gunman, and Wrecking Crew. The NES was my first console. After falling in love with Mario and Zelda at my daycare, my grandparents bought me this console for Christmas. I was very fortunate to grow up on a street of gamers, where seemingly every family in my neighborhood, boys or girls, had a Nintendo! Kids who came to my house usually played Zelda I and II. I played Mario 1–3, Castlevania, and Metroid with my babysitter’s sons, and whenever I visited my dad, Contra, Tetris, TMNT, and more were waiting for me. It was a magical time, and I still love the NES. ✨ What was your first Nintendo system? ❤️

My daughter and I went to see Street Fighter in the theater today. Really fun movie! One of the best parts was how many references it made to the live action and animated movies from 1994.

I found a slightly clearer analog photo of the artwork from this post, so I decided to scan it. If you zoom in, you can see the technique I was using back then. I cut out pieces of adhesive vinyl (what we'd call Cricut vinyl today) and layered them on top of each other to create the finished artwork. Now that I've got presbyopia, I seriously doubt I could pull this off anymore. LOL. Just imagining having to do all that hair detail again sounds like absolute hell. You can also clearly see that every single letter was cut by hand. I even applied screentone (the kind used in manga) over the title logo to create a gradient effect. Looking back, I can't believe how much unnecessary work I put into this. I'm pretty sure I could've at least printed the lettering with the printers we had back then. Oh, and one more interesting detail: at the time I made this, during the location test (an arcade revenue test conducted while the game is still in development), Nina didn't have that yellow sash around her waist yet.
Wow, this is from over 30 years ago… Where did you find it? You can see the clock from Japanese TV in the top-left corner, so this must have been recorded when it appeared on some television program. By the way, this wasn’t a normal drawing. Back then I’d gotten bored with conventional art materials, and I became obsessed with making artwork using what we call “cutting sheets” in Japan—basically the kind of single-color adhesive vinyl you might think of as Cricut vinyl overseas. I would cut each piece by hand with a design knife, layer the pieces on top of one another, and separate the colors that way, almost like making an animation cel. I used that technique for all kinds of character art and concept art. And it wasn’t just the characters. Every letter and logo on this piece was also cut out freehand with a design knife and assembled by hand. I used to say, “Not using a ruler gives it more character.” In retrospect, I probably should have used a ruler. One thing I liked about the technique was that the material was very resistant to UV and didn’t really deteriorate even after several years. The downside was that finishing a single piece took an incredible amount of time. Areas with lots of tonal variation—especially things like gradients in the hair—were absolute hell to make. And the board itself was huge. It was B0 size: 1030 × 1456 mm, or about 40.5 × 57.3 inches. So you needed a pretty large workspace just to make one. After it was finished, it was displayed at an arcade during a location test—basically one of those pre-release, guerrilla-style tests where we would put the game into an arcade and see how much revenue it generated. I later heard that, in the end, a Japanese fan who desperately wanted the piece was allowed to take it home.

When you realize this game came from an Asian soap opera that aired in 2002, the whole vibe clicks. Easily one of my favorite trailers we’ve produced. Re:Burn The Bonfire of Taiwan will resonate with VN fans, Ace Attorney players and DramaWiki frequenters. ow.ly/x0Vu50ZW8VP

I’d wanted the Rampage Arcade1Up cabinet for years but the original was long sold out. Then I discovered they’d brought it back as a deluxe edition similar to my Killer Instinct cab, plus it was discounted on the official site. So I bought it for the office, just assembled today.
