Canada is proceeding with $2.7-billion in cuts to foreign aid. No hint of change in today's federal budget, despite pleas from aid groups.
BREAKING: The Canadian government released Budget 2026 today and we're relieved there are no further cuts to aid. BUT we are surprised and disappointed that there is NO mention of international assistance at all.
We missed an opportunity to reverse the cuts announced in 2025 and invest in the world.
At the very least, we expected the government to prioritize a plan to help alleviate the massive humanitarian crises in Gaza, Sudan, DRC, Yemen, and sadly so many others.
How can we be "masters of our destiny" when we are turning our back on the wellbeing, health, and stability of the world which impacts us deeply? A lack of plan is short-sighted and concerning.
Aid creates stronger trading partners, reduces the risk of conflict and migration, and promotes a more prosperous and secure world. And it represents only 0.32% of our gross national income.
Call or email your MP today and let them know this is not the Canada you want it to be.

Like many academics, my inbox is inundated with emails from prospective applicants who want to join our lab. Almost all of these emails have a summary of one of our papers, a very confident sounding proposal for future research, and highly professional tone. I’m receiving about ten such emails, seven days a week. Same monotonous style of writing, devoid of a human touch. No human can respond to them at any rate.
If I was getting a single such email even once in 3 months two years ago, I would have made a lot of effort to get them on board. I now only do a cursory read and archive them.
If you are ‘genuinely’ interested in our work, please read a paper (not necessarily ours) and share what you learnt, imperfect but uniquely yours. You will get a guaranteed response, may be delayed, but surely.

You can say what you want about Iran but they're definitely pretty unique in their communication: never seen a country threaten another with a math equation before 😅
For those who didn't get it: there is a famous monetary policy formula used by the Fed called the "Taylor rule" that says a central bank's policy rate (i) should equal the neutral real rate (r*) plus target inflation (π*), plus 1.5 times the inflation gap and 0.5 times the output gap (the "i = r* + π* + 1.5(π−π*) + 0.5(y−y*)" part of Ghalibaf's formula).
Ghalibaf adds α(SOH−SOH*) and β(BEM−BEM*): SOH referring to the Strait Of Hormuz and BEM to Bab El-Mandeb. Both have positive coefficient, meaning the more those chokepoints are choked, the higher the rate the Fed would have to set to fight the resulting inflation.
In a nutshell this is Ghalibaf trolling the Fed, telling them that Iran is - in a very real way - setting American monetary policy.
