🌿 Nature-Based Solutions use ecosystems - like trees, wetlands, and green roofs - to cool cities, manage floods, and boost resilience. They're cost-effective, climate-smart, and people-powered. Building with nature means building a healthier urban future.

For too long, Afghan women had no safe spaces to gather, learn, or shape their communities. But in Herat, this is changing. With UN-HABITAT & ECHO, a new social centre is giving women a place to connect, gain skills & reclaim their space. Learn more: loom.ly/umH4PBA

Hosted the EU and UN-Habitat delegations, led by EU Head of Delegation Amb. @EUAmbKenya and UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, to discuss strengthening their support for the Nairobi Rivers ecosystem regeneration program. We explored leveraging Kenya's historic EU ties to enhance ecosystem restoration, aligning with UN-Habitat's strategic plan set for launch in May 2025. The partnership under review will expand European public and private investments in Kenya's green transition, advancing climate action and socio-economic transformation under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Discussions focused on the Nairobi Rivers recovery action plan, recent NEMA regulations and the upcoming launch of 22,000 Climate WorX youths by H.E. President William Ruto. I also sought UN-Habitat's support in improving sanitation, water quality testing and riparian ecosystem restoration in informal settlements. Accompanying me were NEMA DG Mr. Mamo Mamo and Environment and Climate Change SA Mr. John Elungata.

Excellent meeting with @HonAdenDuale & @EUAmbKenya - Henriette Geiger. We learned about plans for the Nairobi River recovery & discussed possibilities to strengthen our collaboration. River regeneration can be a catalyst for infrastructure development, incl. affordable housing.

Over recent decades, urbanisation has been a major driver of habitat loss. But this doesn't have to be the case. Well managed urban areas can support high levels of biodiversity which can provide a number of benefits to wildlife and nature, as well as people living in cities.
