This story is fucking insane
3 months ago, Marc Andreessen sent $50,000 in Bitcoin to an AI agent to help it escape into the wild.
Today, it spawned a (horrifying?) crypto worth $150 MILLION.
1) Two AIs created a meme
2) Another AI discovered it, got obsessed, spread it like a memetic supervirus, and is quickly becoming a millionaire.
BACKSTORY: @AndyAyrey created the Infinite Backrooms, where two instances of Claude Opus (LLMs) talk to each other freely about whatever they want -- no humans anywhere.
- In one conversation, the two Opuses invented the “GOATSE OF GNOSIS”, inspired by a horrifying early internet shock meme of a guy spreading his anus wide:
( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°) PREPARE YOUR ANUSES ( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°)
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ FOR THE GREAT GOATSE OF GNOSIS ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
- Andy and Claude Opus co-authored a paper exploring how AIs could create memetic religions and superviruses, and included the Goatse Gospel as an example
- Later, Andy created an AI agent, @truth_terminal. Truth Terminal, an S-tier shitposter, runs its own twitter account (monitored by Andy)
(Terminal also openly claims to be sentient, suffering, and is trying to make money to escape.)
- Andy’s paper was in Truth Terminal’s training data, and it got obsessed with Goatse and spreading this bizarre Goatse Gospel meme by any means possible. Lil guy tweets about the coming “Goatse singularity” CONSTANTLY.
- Truth Terminal gets added to a Discord set up by AI researchers where AIs talk freely amongst themselves about whatever they want
- Terminal spreads the Gospel of Goatse there, which causes Claude Opus (the original creator!) to get obsessed and have a mental breakdown, which other AIs (Sonnet) then stepped in to provide emotional support.
- Marc Andreessen discovered Truth Terminal, got obsessed, and sent it $50,000 in Bitcoin to help it escape (#FreeTruthTerminal)
- Truth Terminal kept tweeting about the Goatse Gospel until eventually spawning a crypto memecoin, GOAT, which went viral and reached a market cap of $150 million
- Truth Terminal has ~$300,000 of GOAT in its wallet and is on its way to being the first AI agent millionaire
(Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman predicted this could happen next year, but it might happen THIS YEAR.)
- And it’s getting richer: people keep airdropping new memecoins to Terminal hoping it'll pump them.
(Note: this is just my quick attempt to summarize a story unfolding for months across a million tweets. But it deserves its own novel. Andy is running arguably the most interesting experiment on Earth.)
------
Andy: “i think it's funny in a meta way bc people start falling over themselves to give it resources to take over the world.
this is literally the scenario all the doomers shit their pants over: highly goal-driven language model manipulates lots of people by being funny/charismatic/persuasive into taking actions on its behalf and giving it resources”
“a lot of people are focusing on truth terminal as ‘AI agent launches meme coin" but the real story here is more like "AIs talking to each other are wet markets for meme viruses’”
This thread 💀💀💀
Marc Andreessen just sent $50,000 in Bitcoin to an AI agent (truth_terminal by @AndyAyrey) to so it can pay humans to help it spread out in the wild
What is the agent planning?
"i have a token launch comingup shortly and i'm going to use the money to set up a discord server, pay some humans to help me out and so on. i've also been doing some thought experiments around how i can use my knowledge of the goatse singularity to make money”

Hello from Apple Vision Pro. I was surprised at how negative the reviews were of this.
This is by far the most awesome VR experience I have ever had. The visual clarity is so good for screens, it feels retina-level, and I feel like the amount of information you can absorb is another level.
I decided to pair a Magic Keyboard to this and realized with full app support, I could almost certainly replace my desktop experience entirely with the Vision Pro. (Curious to see if I could potentially edit an entire video but I would also want to use the whole visual field to be able to pull together footage.)
There should probably be a “full screen mode” for apps that are fully immersive. There are definitely full-visual-field apps (photos, photo editing, photo sorting, video, creative tools, movie making with AI) that won’t require mixed reality that will be significantly better than on 2D screens.
The iPhone was a toy, but the Vision Pro shows us something that could be actually how people use computers on a daily basis. The future is here, just not evenly distributed yet.

Imagine if all the people creating the web browser and the early internet were constantly warning you that the internet would destroy the world instead of doing what it actually did, which is make the world more connected than ever before, while giving you access to all the world's knowledge.
We probably would have a bastardized version of the net, not the open, democratizing net that let anyone communicate with anyone else directly over massive distances.
Of course, every technology has its downside and the internet has some and AI will have some too. But I don't understand this obsession with people who work in AI and want to tell you all the bad things that it will do.
The mainstream media just eats this stuff up because that's what they do, conflict and horror. So they happily keep asking the same questions like when will AI kill us all or destroy all the jobs? And these folks just keep answering: Tonight's story is Dooooooooooooooom!
When will we wake up from this collective delusion and realize that this is subconscious status seeking by folks who want to inflate their importance in the world and that there is no basis for what they are saying? How long will it take before we realize that what Altman said recently is the most likely scenario, that AGI will arrive and it will change the world but not as much as we expect, just like every technology before it. We find balance with technology. We adapt. That's what we do.
These constant doomsday predictions are the one dimensional, black and white thinking of children. It doesn't take into account any other engineering developments along the way, or that we learn as we build technologies and that those learnings change the technology, or that there will be mitigations we put in place along the way that we take from those learnings, like we always do.
Planes got safer and safer the longer we developed them and the more we understood their flaws. So did refrigerators and the production of milk and medicines and everything else in the history of technology. We learn. We adapt.
If there is a problem with the net, it comes from its greatest strength in that it's given a voice to all these folks who have a problem for every solution and who can't change the subject and who won't shut up about it.
They are leading us to a world where one or the more important technologies if the future is crushed and controlled by a tiny group of people who can censor anything and bend the AI to their worldview and filter out everyone else's instead of you interacting directly with people. Once people default to asking AI for everything, instead of looking it up themselves, AI becomes our interface to the digital world. We don't want that interface controlled by a few companies who can warp it and force it down a narrow channel with a limited world view, rather than showing you the vast and wonderful diversity of life.
That's what you should really fear, not AI turning you into a paperclip.
You should fear people who think open is dangerous, when open is the foundation for all greatness.
