Zoning in America is what you’d get if every old crank with an axe to grind got to write a law to limit something they didn’t like. I appreciate the work of dismantling these walls to prosperity and equity brick by brick, but at what point do we just tear the whole thing down?
We're making childcare WAY more accessible (🧵) For decades, building childcare facilities hasn't been allowed in most of Austin (yellow/red). My first item of 2023 is changing this. Now, nearly our entire city will be zoned for childcare development (green).

it's incredible that so many people refuse to use perhaps the greatest, most life-saving invention of all time because they're afraid of needles

Cars hit buildings, 7-11 in particular, so frequently and with such force, it is incumbent on the business to protect themselves with real bollards. Yet the message for people on foot/bikes is to prevent their own deaths with eye contact, foam hats and bright colors.
Replying to @Boenau
7-11 just had to pay 91 million because they had no bollards and a guy lost both legs when a car hit him. This type of accident and lawsuit is common

I don't think people realize the dangers they put disabled people in when expecting us to ask for "nicely" for accommodations. Not only can they refuse it. It puts a target on our backs. And they can later attack us by mentioning that they gave us accessibility once.

How to become wealthy in the USA: * Never get sick * Never have a sick spouse, or divorce them immediately if they get sick * Don't allow your children to get sick * Don't take care of your parents or siblings if they get sick * Inherit a home or enough money to buy a home

i just dont get why people think single family homes have to be coddled like these flustered chickens and need these big tall buildings wrapping the perimeter like the castle walls and to have such admiration of the classical city and not realize none taper density like that

the legacy environmental movement had some big wins fifty years ago but today it's exactly this pastoralist sentiment *within the democratic coalition* that's standing in the way of solving many of our problems from carbon to housing

Allowing Trump to lie on @MeetThePress and leaving “fact checking” to the website is not how we should be treating a man who launched an insurrection. It’s 2023, we should have learned this lesson over 7 years. Ratings aren’t worth our democracy

Key point here: The effort by Senate Dems to examine Starlink's contracts with the Defense Department are perfectly consistent with the sort of oversight Congress often does. Don't let the Musk distortion field obscure that truth.
Elon Musk runs a US defense contractor. He's shown himself to be an unreliable partner, at best ignorant of international affairs and susceptible to Russian propaganda. Executive branch oversight and defense procurement are part of Congress's job. They're looking into it. Good.

Accommodation and access for disabled people are not a gift, favor or advantage. Undoing inaccessibility, inequity and exclusion is not special treatment.

Building a bike lane on part of a street while the majority of the street remains dedicated to cars is not forcing anyone to ride a bike. A lack of a safe bike lane does indeed force a lot of people to never bike.

All republicans want a national abortion ban. Full stop.
WTF? NBC just ran a headline that reads, “Trump wants to bring the country together on abortion: ‘Both sides are going to like me.’” Not only is NBC legitimizing Trump by giving him a national platform tomorrow, but they’re lying about his dangerous abortion ban. Shame on NBC.

<On trans people using the bathroom they identify with> Republicans: We don't want women being harassed. <On women being harassed literally anywhere else> Republicans: That wouldn't have happened if she didn't look/dress/act like a slut.

Everyone in the news business should read this. Everyone outside of the news business should demand cable TV networks, newspapers and news outlets abide by it. In short: "With democracy on the ballot, the mainstream press must change its ways." theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Oh. Hey. Time for the media who’ve been echoing so much of the fallacious impeachment hooha, to ask Kevin McCarthy why his brother got $7.6 million in federal contracts.
