In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

It is a good day for democracy.
O povo brasileiro falou.

A good day for democracy, with big wins in Serbia and Brazil. Israel could be next on Tuesday, then the US midterms the following week. The best case against the autocrats is the autocrats (and how they govern with corrupt self-promotion). trib.al/l5x6pNO

Lula liquidó a Flavio Bolsonaro.

Sunday’s election will determine the fate of Brazilian democracy, the fate of Latin American sovereignty, and the survival of the Amazon rainforest — which is to say, that of all humanity. In a sane world, Trump's (and Zuckerberg’s) escalating efforts to bring Bolsonaro back to power would be front-page news, but alas… we are not so lucky to live there. Instead, we live in a world where Lula and Bolsonaro are neck-and-neck ahead of Sunday’s run-off. progressive.international/wi…

On the day the Nobel peace prize recognises international judge Navi Pillay, the US announces institutional sanctions against the ICC.   I am writing this from Nuremberg where 80 years ago, American judges and lawyers played a crucial role in trying the highest Nazi leaders and commanders, and establishing the foundational principles of international criminal law.  80 years later, what a betrayal.  The Trump administration’s decision is appalling.  But ultimately, it is not about them. It is about us. The US grotesque decision is a test for all European governments which have been tiptoeing, shying away from confronting and responding to the predatory actions from the trump administration.  They now need to rise to the moment. History demands of Europe that it stands for international justice and its institutions.  There is only one possible response: impose immediately blocking orders. The US sanctions cannot and should not be implemented on European territory.  This is not a USA moment. This is a “Us” moment. Let’s rise to it.  Because humanity must win.  reuters.com/world/us-imposes…
