The Clotilda wreck was found in the Mobile River in 2019. In Africatown, Alabama, descendants still honor Redoshi and her shipmates, keeping their stories alive and powerful.

She passed in 1937 at around 90, one of the last living survivors of the Atlantic slave trade. Historian Sylviane Diouf later told her story in Dreams of Africa in Alabama.

Redoshi carried her heritage through every year of her life. She shared stories of Africa with family and neighbors, living as a wise elder who remembered the world before the ship.

After emancipation, she and the other Clotilda survivors built a community near Selma, keeping African customs alive and passing down their language and stories. #History #Legacy

Her enslavers forced her into marriage with another Clotilda survivor, but she kept going—raising a family while working the fields of Dallas County.

An Alabama planter, Washington Smith, bought her and renamed her Sally Smith—but she held onto her African name and the memory of home.

In July 1860, the Clotilda reached Mobile Bay, Alabama. To cover their tracks, its owners burned the ship—and Redoshi’s journey into bondage began.

In 1860, she boarded the Clotilda with about 110 other captives—on the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the U.S., over 50 years after the ban.

Around age 12, soldiers of the Kingdom of Dahomey raided her town, killed her loved ones, captured her, and forced her on a brutal march to the coast to be sold to slave traders. #Blackhistory
