As the Rt. Hon. @RebeccaKadagaUG reminded us at #KTASymposium2026, regional integration can no longer stop at physical borders. It must extend into our digital spaces too.
Now comes the work of making that real.

Innovation without compromising rights.
Rules businesses can navigate.
Consumers who can transact safely.
Fewer barriers across borders.
Day One of #KTASymposium2026 was about what it takes to turn a Digital Single Market from ambition into practice.

There’s still plenty from the room last week worth unpacking. And we’re starting with a question that affects thousands of businesses:
What is still stopping MSMEs from fully embracing e-commerce?
Mr. Patrick Mugisha, Commissioner @mtic_uganda pointed to trust, digital skills, infrastructure, awareness and policy.
Walk into a physical shop and you can see the seller, inspect what you’re buying, pay and leave.
Take that transaction online and the dynamics change. Who are you buying from? Can you trust the transaction? What happens when something goes wrong?
As Uganda continues to grow its digital economy, getting more MSMEs online will require more than technology. The ecosystem around the transaction has to give businesses and consumers the confidence to participate.
And that’s just one of the conversations we’re taking from #KTASymposium2026 into this week.

Through these frameworks, we seek to harness technology to drive socio-economic transformation, improve public service delivery and expand economic opportunities for our citizens.
We are seated here today to talk about e-commerce, but I would like to inform you that Uganda has made significant progress. The Government has invested a lot in digital connectivity.
Our national fibre network has grown from about 20,000 kilometres in 2021 to approximately 60,000 kilometres today. We are aiming to reach the 100,000-kilometre mark by 2030, as our current medium-term planning period comes to an end.

That’s a wrap on the #KTASymposium!
For two days, we joined the push to build Africa’s Digital Single Market. Our message was that cross-border digital trade only works if people trust it, so data protection and security have to be built in from the start.
To everyone who stopped by our Digital Security Clinic, thank you! We are glad we helped make your devices more secure and showed you safer ways to communicate. 🔐
Now pass it on. Share what you learnt with your loved ones, your colleagues and your workplace. Digital security is strongest when everyone around you has it too.

Uganda. Tanzania. Kenya. South Sudan. Ghana. Rwanda. Burundi.
Seven markets, represented in one conversation and a commitment to work more closely across borders.
At the end of #KTASymposium2026, e-commerce associations backed greater continental collaboration on market access, policy, payments, logistics and implementation of Africa’s digital trade frameworks.
The next step is turning that commitment into connections African businesses can actually use.

A Digital Single Market means very little if the package cannot reach the customer.
Commissioner JP Mugisha of @mtic_uganda and Steven Kateihwaho (DHL), moderated by Ibrahim Abudhi, brought #KTASymposium2026 down to the last mile.
Global networks can move a package across borders, but local knowledge, infrastructure and partnerships are what get it to the customer.
Digital trade has a physical journey too.

Fragmented regulations, incompatible payment systems, inadequate logistics, cybersecurity risks, and limited digital skills continue to constrain cross-border digital trade.
Addressing these challenges requires regional cooperation, predictable rules, and trusted digital systems.

Africa does not have a creativity problem. But who carries the responsibility for turning that creativity into sustainable business?
Shadrach Kisaame challenged creatives to professionalize, understand the business behind their craft and better position themselves for opportunity.
Derrick Muhanguzi, popularly known as @Wonder__jR , pushed the other side: creatives also need to be in the rooms, systems and decisions shaping their industry.
A lively exchange, but a shared conclusion: talent needs an ecosystem around it to earn, grow and scale.

In her remarks at #KTASymposium2026, Rt. Hon. @RebeccaKadagaUG, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, spoke to the next frontier of East African integration: making it easier for businesses, payments and digital services to move across the region.
From interoperable payment systems to digital identities, electronic signatures, cybersecurity and consumer protection, the systems connecting our markets must work together.
The frameworks and ambitions are there. The measure of progress now is implementation and whether businesses and people can actually experience the region as one connected market.

Building Africa’s Digital Single Market: “The Role of Government & Private Sector in Achieving Regional Integration”
Africa stands at a critical point in its digital transformation. The opportunity is significant: the continent’s e-commerce market is projected to reach USD $113 billion by 2029, while the African Union’s Digital Single Market ambition seeks to strengthen integration and unlock greater cross-border trade.
A UN report published in 2024 cited estimates that a Digital Single Market could increase intra-African trade by up to 30% by 2030. These projections underline the scale of the opportunity, but realising it will require deliberate action.
Three priorities are essential:
1. Interoperability: Digital identity, payments, business registration, customs and trade systems must communicate seamlessly across borders, reducing duplication and the cost of doing business.
2. Trust and security: Cybersecurity, data protection, reliable digital authentication and consumer protection must underpin online transactions.
3. MSME inclusion: Small businesses need affordable connectivity, digital skills and proportionate light regulatory requirements to access regional markets and compete effectively.
Africa must move beyond simply connecting people and platforms to building a connected digital economy. This calls for stronger regional cooperation, harmonised digital standards and partnerships between governments, regulators and the private sector.
The opportunity is clear: Make cross-border digital trade simpler, safer and more accessible, and turn Africa’s digital potential into jobs, enterprise growth and shared prosperity. @kta_law @mtic_uganda
