"Sun dogs" (aka parhelions) happen when light from the sun is refracted by the ice crystals that make up high clouds. In rarer cases, a 22掳 halo can surround the sun. Sun dogs are often at brightest when the sun is just above the horizon, which was the case for many Sunday. #kywx

馃尋锔廐igh cirrus clouds in the upper levels of the atmosphere helped create "sun dogs" late Sunday afternoon just prior to sunset! Classic examples of this phenomenon were captured by webcams near Marion in the west and near Bedford in Trimble County in the north-central region...

馃椉馃檶Big shout-out to the 6th graders from Austin-Tracy Elementary in Barren County! It was a perfect morning to show these students around our site at @WKUAgriculture Farm to show them how we measure and collect weather data.
馃УThis morning's #DroughtMonitor update from @NOAADrought shows no significant change from last week's reported conditions. D1 ('Moderate Drought') remains across parts of the western and south-central region.
October is historically the driest month of the year for the Commonwealth. Recent trends are living up to the billing, as noted by the lack of rainfall for the state as a whole for the past week. #kywx
馃摙 馃УNEW: From @kyclimate Service Climatologist Grace Dines comes a fresh product that helps place current soil moisture conditions at our sites into historical perspective.
Also, under the "statewide maps" tab, you will find maps for average historical soil moisture indices along with the historical soil moisture index change. Sites that show arrows pointing up or down denote more significant percentage point changes within a given period.
You can observe indices & changes going back a full year by clicking on the tabs at the upper right.
The HSMI will be a useful tool in helping to determine #drought onset & improvement over time.
As always, our team welcomes any feedback on this product at [email protected].#kywx

Most of the region can expect a light 0.5-1.0" of rain over the next 2 days. No river flooding is forecast, but today's stronger storms could bring 1-2+" of rain and brief flash flooding to isolated spots, especially in IN. Clear, dry, and cooler weather arrives by Saturday!
