Next frontier for ecommerce
How to have "monthly usage revenue" as a subscription component
For many brands the first half of October was lesser than expected and the last week has been better than expected
In the era of replacing SAAS with AI, everyone focused on its creation, very few looked at it's maintenance
Reason for q-com to not launch private labels is margin in advertising business. The margin of product is far lower than selling an ad space to a brand
Meta rep from the Health & Wellness category has indicated drops across the category in the last 2 months and is projecting to continue for next few weeks as well. December should be a pick-up
"AI Mode incentivises dialogue, Google wants to keep you engaged to serve more ads at each turn"
Due to AI, for the first time, do we see decrease in CPM's?
As Google can serve more ads per customer per session and create enough value for all parties in the transaction - buyer, seller and Google
Reddit call was absolutely fascinating. Everyone should listen to it as a bellwether for where the internet is going
- AI Mode is increasingly default Google experience
- AI Mode provides rich info and data in line, less incentive to leave search
- AI Mose incentivizes dialog, Google wants to keep you engaged to serve more ads at each turn
- Google will milk search for as much revenue as possible as they transition from a search company to a cloud service and chip company
- As traffic from humans becomes more scarce this will put Google in an increasingly adversarial position to the rest of the internet
- This is a massive headwind to all media type companies who are not destinations
- This is a massive headwind to all content-driven go-to-market motions especially in the SMB. You have seen companies like HubSpot and Monday.com get crushed by this funnel collapse
We are entering the end game - a knife fight for the remaining and dwindling volume of human traffic on the internet
Final 4 days to push your remarketing budgets harder for the final Diwali season week - Festive shipping window closes soon
Simple principle in scaling
When things work, test new things - ads, offers, pages
When things don't work - double down on winners
ABO Testing → CBO Winners → Cost Cap (Old-Winners)
Here’s what’s working:
┃
┣ ABO Testing
┃ ┣ Multiple concepts mixed in same campaign
┃ ┣ Find which angles actually convert
┃ ┗ This is where you discover, not scale
┃
┣ CBO Push (The Winner Round)
┃ ┣ Take the ABO winners
┃ ┣ Move budget
┃
┣ Lower Event Campaign
┃ ┣ Optimized for: ATC or Initiate Checkout
┃ ┣ Not conversion but mid-funnel signals
┃
┣ Cost Cap (Non-Spenders)
┃ ┣ Old winners, incremental attribution
┃ ┣ These are proven performers
┃ ┣ Cost cap keeps them disciplined
┃ ┗ Feed them slow, let them work
Ad idea
Run a remarketing ad like this
- Full text
- Copy - "Product of the month"
- Below that add one to two product reviews
If you run creator partnership ads, here’s the actual test for whether a creator is adding value to your brand:
1. Filter all creator ads
2. Go to Breakdowns → Audience Segment
3. Check the % split of spend: new audience vs. (engaged + existing)
Now read the number honestly:
→ 70%+ new audience - good. The creator is doing their job.
→ 60% new audience - not there yet. Try a different format
→ Under 50% new audience - It’s a bottom-of-funnel ad you are just overpaying with ad spend + creator fees
Every creator partnership exists to do one thing: unlock audiences you didn’t already have.
If it’s not doing that, it's not good partnership
If you run creator partnership ads, here’s how to check if the creator is actually genuinely adding value to your brand
1. Filter all the creator ads
2. Now go to breakdowns and select Audience segment
Check the % split of amount spent between audience segments
Of the total spend on that creator ad
1. New audience > 70% spend - Good
2. New audience > 60% spend - Work to do; try a new format
3. New audience < 50% - This is basically BOF ad, not helping your brand
With every creator partnership your goal should be to unlock new audiences
You should aim for minimum 70% new audience with creator partnerships
1. Exclusions are no longer working in Meta
2. Customer lifecycle strategy has never worked since launch
The only thing working well is value rules, we have started to move away from exclusions to using value rules in ad account
Helped new reach and new audience immensely
This is pretty alarming.
Ok, been hearing a lot of Meta advertisers complaining about performance issues this month.
Tbh, I kinda ignored it because I wasn't seeing it clearly.
I was actually seeing some good performance on the back of some CRO wins.
But I found something interesting in the data that surely relates...
And I found it because I was investigating why this account was having a suspiciously good stretch 😅
Meta is now prioritizing delivering to warmer users more than ever.
I first noticed it in one account, figured it was an anomaly or something I caused.
The proportion of spend going to "engaged" audience vs new has dramatically increased.
I often look at this ratio to understand how Meta is optimizing my budget overall and at ad set and ad levels.
In recent months, this account was seeing on average, for every dollar spent on engaged users, $6 were spent on new.
6:1 ratio.
That gap closed rapidly in October.
Recent days, the ratio has been around 1:1.
I figured maybe it's seasonal, but October last year was ~10:1.
I assumed I caused this somehow or maybe something had changed on the site, buuuut...
Then I found it in another account I don't manage.
Annnnd another with a toootally different account structure.
2 other media buyers have confirmed seeing this in other accounts as well.
It's difficult to see or prove this across accounts because there's no uniform "engaged audience" definition.
Every media buyer and account sets them differently (if they set them at all 🙃), so your data will vary from mine.
Looking at the chart, the two lines converging means less daily spend is going to new audiences and more to engaged audiences (which in this case is defined as visitors from past 30 days).
These are all purchase-optimized campaigns and we make very few changes.
Meta is doing this, not me.
In Meta's reports you can look at a trend chart and breakdown by audience segment to see this yourself.
I’m not yet sure if this is actually bad or not for these accounts, but it’s an interesting trend/shift I’ve never seen before like this.
I'm not making any changes... yet. I'm still observing what Meta is doing and trying to figure out why.
Maybe this will bite me, but I've found the more patience I have and the fewer changes I make, the more I learn about how/why the system operates.
This account and biz is humming along fine, actually kinda doing great, but I'm trying to find evidence of other immediate and/or longer-term impact.
So far, the incremental-attributed conversions are looking good, external click-attribution looks good too.
Maybe that's all skewed by the warmer traffic and maybe that will run out soon.
I'm imagining this isn't the case for all advertisers.
I trust Meta more than others, but I'm still very skeptical of what's going on here.
Are you seeing anything like this?
What do you think is going on?
Instagram launching long form videos -> Long form ads will gain momentum on Instagram
Create longer interesting ads
I'm getting a lot of inbound about Instagram starting to work on longer-form video. A few things to clarify in case it's helpful:
- This is going to take time to get right, but we're excited and committed
- Features is not fully launched yet, we're testing and ramping up access slowly
- We understand the economics matter a ton, and are exploring multiple options to help long-form creators get paid
As always, we'll communicate about progress as we go, and I'm happy to answer any questions.
It took 20 years for the internet to catch up to episodic content
Now it’s happening everywhere at once:
→ YouTubers are shipping multi-part series
→ Head of Instagram said episodic content is exactly what their new long-form feature is built for
Soon, I hope Meta brings this sequencing ad feature in ads too
→ YouTube already lets advertisers sequence ads by funnel stage - show someone ad 1, then ad 2 only if they watched the first
Episodic content working in organic is a preview of how your ads will be change in 6 months.
Three years ago, everyone said the same thing: “Reels and Shorts are destroying attention spans.”
Three years later, it's exact opposite
→ Average watch time per video has gone up over the last 2 years
→ YouTube-on-TV viewership has climbed every single year since
And now the final nail: Instagram just launched long-form video.
The platform everyone blamed for killing attention spans is now betting its roadmap on people sitting through longer videos.
Short-form is the best tool for discovery of good content
This change has happened in organic, and will happen in ads
What starts in organic, eventually makes it way to ads
Super interesting concept
Advancing the frontier of PERSUASION.
