Twitter won't allow me (successfully) add to this thread anymore. Possibly because the guy who built my car is now in charge. This is not a conspiracy. It's just that my car breaks down a lot so I'm not surprised that "X" does too.
This is a live thread about driving from South Dublin all the way to Liguria in Italy in an electric car with a 12 year old daughter and a yellow dog called Honeycomb.

Today, I learned that Australia is a land mass that broke off of Antarctica. As a result, it didn't have robust fauna or earthworm ecosystems, so it doesn't have millions of years of soil compaction. That's why all of it's lifeforms are venomous. 🧵
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Australia has ~1,000 native earthworm species despite splitting from Antarctica. Venom in snakes (not "all" lifeforms) stems from elapid radiation in isolation, not soil/earthworms (australian.museum/learn/animals/… discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/w…). australian.museum/learn/animals/… discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/w…

There are no Russian conscripts on the frontline.

The endless slaughter of Ukrainian and Russians must stop. We should some sympathy for the poor Russian conscripts too. Those kids have no choice but to fight and die in drone strikes.

Politics professor @AnMailleach writing on the most salient issues for voters in today's Sunday Indepenent.
As usual, just a handful of matters concern the Irish electorate. Issues that get lots of media/political attention, such as Gaza and united Ireland, barely register with people. From today's Ireland Thinks poll

Astonishingly, Dan Sheehan started and played the match at No. 8.
1. A lot being made of Dan Sheehan being named at 8 for this evenings game. Personally with the new rules I think it's gamesmanship and there will be a change before kick off. Some of the media think Sheehan's selection is an issue for Coombes and Gleeson...

Ukrainians keep showing enormous courage in defending their country against Putin’s immoral and indeed evil efforts to conquer a neighbor. They have resisted now for four years and eight months and we should do all we can to help them.

Munster’s second half stats this season (despite their late try) are absolutely horrendous. They are a handy enough first half team to be fair. #LEIvMUN

In my new piece for @TheAtlantic yesterday on Trump’s Russia - Ukraine negotiations I have a short section on how to deter Putin from escalating its shadow war against Europe. Three concrete ideas that may work— threaten to place air defense in western Ukraine, extend Ukraine’s use of Starlink into Russia, and in the event of a mass casualty event in Europe, designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The last one we used successfully in 2024. All of these, if communicated privately, may given Putin pause. theatlantic.com/internationa…

What this shows is that kissing Trump’s ass always fails. He reacts only to pressure. In this case terrible US polling, screaming Republicans, and catastrophic damage being done to US defense companies

Top tip: If you’re going to have a discrete partnership with the CIA make sure it’s discreet. And don’t enter into any partnerships with people who don’t understand the difference between discrete and discreet.
To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there. The speed has not been restored. And the delivery of interceptors to protect us against Russian ballistic missiles is still delayed. We’re waiting for interceptors that were already agreed on. But they are still not coming. This is a real problem, because the Russians attack us almost every single day. All of this is happening while we continue our quite successful operations on the front. We keep defending positions. Things have become harder – partly because of the Starlink and Starshield policies and speed limits. But our frontline is still holding and I am proud of how strong our people are. Starshield/Starlink speed restrictions remain in place. Every day matters for Ukraine, because every Ukrainian life matters. Our people are waiting for positive news, hoping that the restrictions will be lifted and our defenders will have the capabilities they need to protect lives. Unfortunately, as of today, nothing has changed. We continue to wait.

A straightforward imperialist land-grab, in other words. Utterly bewildering that there are, even now, gullible Westerners talking about NATO expansion, poking the bear, US-sponsored coups and the like.
Putin on Ukraine: The lands lost by Kyiv are not "their territory"; they are historically Russian lands.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Kyiv predates Moscow by centuries, and southern/eastern Ukraine was ruled by the Cossack Hetmanate and Crimean Khanate long before 18th-century Russian Imperial annexation. In 1991, every Ukrainian region voted overwhelmingly for independence, recognized by Russia 1994. britannica.com/place/Ukraine/… treaties.un.org/Pages/showDeta…
