Haven't read anything from Heffer in years, but his writing was always good. Still is.
‘Of all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged.’ Simon Heffer gives zero stars to a ‘preposterous’ rant by a crank conspiracy theorist who for a few days was once PM, @trussliz. telegraph.co.uk/books/non-fi…

When we did this focus group last week, I really wanted to know if voters felt let down over PM’s EU remarks. That’s not what I got. One, a Tory voter, clear she’d made right choice on Brexit. The others, a mix of Lab & Reform voters, were open to conversation & had some regrets
Left: Susanna Reid, "65% of your own constituents in Makerfield voted to leave the EU. Have you let them down or are you telling them they made the wrong decision?" Right: In Beth Rigby's recent focus group from Makerfield, Leave voters said they want to rejoin the EU Brexiter 1, "I voted to leave.. Much younger then.. Didn't understand it.. Dad told me to vote for Leave.. It's harder now.. Maybe it would be better if we went back" Brexiter 2, "Everything seemed better when we were in Europe, it just did" Brexiter 3, "I think we were over-promised things.. I think we would be much better as part of an EU.. Than on our own" My view: Susanna Reid's question assumes that because an estimated 65% of Makerfield voted Leave in 2016, those voters must still support Brexit today. But Beth Rigby's focus group tells a rather different story. Here are people who actually voted Leave, openly acknowledging that they were influenced by others, didn't fully understand the consequences, or believed promises that haven't materialised. And that distinction matters. Changing your mind after ten years of lived experience isn't an admission of stupidity. It's an acknowledgement that new evidence deserves consideration. What's particularly interesting is that this isn't simply a handful of dissatisfied voters. A More in Common poll found that 45% of Makerfield residents would now vote to rejoin the EU, compared with 38% who would stay outside. Of course, not every Leave voter has changed their mind. But neither should politicians or journalists assume that a vote cast in 2016 represents an unchanging opinion in 2026. The question shouldn't be whether Andy Burnham is betraying the voters of Makerfield by reconsidering Brexit. It should be whether politicians are listening to what those voters are telling them today, rather than assuming they must believe exactly what they believed a decade ago. Democracy isn't about freezing public opinion in time. It's about allowing people to reconsider decisions when the evidence changes.

Once again, I live in Ukraine, and I have never met a soldier or a civilian who is fighting for Zelenskyy. Ukrainians resist because our country was invaded, because russian occupation means kidnapped children, executed civilians, torture chambers, mass graves, rape, and looting. Our soldiers defend their families, their culture, their civilians, and their future, not the president.

Finland's Housing First (from 2008) invested heavily in permanent housing plus support via govt and NGOs, cutting long-term homelessness over 50% with near-zero rough sleeping for years. Houston used coordinated Housing First to drop overall homelessness ~60% since 2011. California spent ~$24B since 2019 yet saw numbers rise ~30k amid high costs, weak tracking and supply shortages. Outcomes depend on design, not just volume.

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

Because a certain kind of man believes that not getting everything he wants from women is oppression. This applies both to incels and to the type of trans-identified man who insists that speech, laws and physical spaces should be reconfigured around his self-image.
Why is asking for female-only spaces called hateful?

In the Tavistock study, children on puberty blockers went on to cross-sex hormones at a rate of 98%. Suggesting we know what will happen to the little kids on the Puberty Blockers Trial. Sterilisation, stunted growth, life-long medicalisation. #StopTheTrial @baronesscash

Superb interview.
🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me. The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated. Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS. Me for the Sunday Times… thetimes.com/article/cfde7b4…

Note to the EU haters. You can hate it. Many do. But it is still the UK's neighbours being in a club that the UK has to deal with from a point of weakness. Geography denial has failed, obviously. So far the only serious idea I've seen is "muddle through". Is that it?
UK offering Freedom of Movement would be the game changer for conversations with the EU, one of the trio of people, pounds and positivity I identified earlier this year as crucial to any significant move to removing barriers. thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

To note also, that notwithstanding the EU distaste for a Swiss-style relationship, should the UK come and say you can have freedom of movement, what do we get, the answer is going to be removal of most barriers to goods trade. Just whether that is acceptable in the UK.
