Locked doors matter. So do cameras and other school security measures. @R2Pdoors
But physical security alone cannot eliminate every risk.
During my @BBCNews interview, we discussed how an attacker can breach a locked door and the difficult decisions communities face when investing in additional protection.
Security is important. So is recognizing concerning behaviors before someone reaches the point of violence.
We need both.

There is no single solution to mass shootings.
That was one of the most important points I made during my BBC News interview following the school shooting in Bend, Oregon at Silver Rail Elementary.
We need physical security. We need responsible gun ownership. And we need people who recognize and report concerning behaviors.
Prevention requires more than one approach.
Watch my conversation with @BBCNews.

A 3-year-old brought a loaded gun to a Michigan daycare. Thankfully, a teacher intervened before anyone was hurt.
As the former head of the FBI’s Active Shooter Program, I know prevention starts long before an emergency.
Safe gun storage saves lives. Our children deserve better.

I voted. 🇺🇸
As an attorney and someone who spent much of my career in law enforcement and public service, I have always believed that participating in our democracy is both a privilege and a responsibility.
We may not always agree on the issues or the people we choose to support, but we all have a voice and an opportunity to use it.
I used mine today, and I hope you’ll use yours, too.

What happens when advances in forensic science give investigators another chance to solve cases everyone else has left behind?
That question is at the heart of Women Who Talk to the Dead—the true story of Operation UNITED and the pursuit of answers in 200 murder cases.

Making the rounds today with information about this year’s Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay and video contests. The video contest invites students in grades 5–8 to explore the Declaration of Independence and share what they learn through video. Hoping to see lots of entries!
Along the way, I loved seeing all the uplifting and encouraging details on the school grounds—from a kindness rock garden to colorful murals and messages of encouragement.
These are the places where young minds are learning, growing and finding their voices. @TodaysDAR #USA
I'm writing my next book for parents and caregivers who want to take a more active role in their children's safety.
I've started sharing some of that thinking in my newsletter, Calm in the Chaos.

Parents tell me they feel powerless when it comes to keeping their children safe at school.
I understand that feeling. But I don't believe they're powerless.
That's a big part of the book I'm writing now: what parents and caregivers can actually do to help keep their children safe.
More soon.
Three books. Very different subjects. One question running through all of them:
What can we learn that helps prevent the next act of violence?
Good conversations today at @bnbooks in Clarendon about Women Who Talk to the Dead, Stop the Killing, and A Simple Guide to the Second Amendment.
And I'm working on what comes next.
All stocked up and ready for readers. 📚
True crime. Mass shooting prevention. The Second Amendment.
Three very different books, but all written for the same reason: I believe knowledge matters.
If one has been sitting on your reading list, now’s a good time to change that.
Which one are you picking up first?
