In a movie, the audience notices action first. Movement captures our eye, and then we process the meaning of that action.
We want to duplicate that in our screenwriting.
That means:
1. Describe the action. THEN.
2. The meaning of the action.

This small little thing helps with the feeling of watching a movie on screen rather than reading a narrative.
It's fair to ask what kind of difference could this possibly make. And it's true, one small thing makes very little difference.
But the small things add up over 100 pages, and it helps keep a reader immersed in the emotional experience.
Can all these small things save a bad story?
Nope. Not even close.
The goal is to always make a great story more easy to recognize.

Speech-to-text at it again! "Oh my God, my mom just delivered petit fours" turned into "oh my God, my mom just delivered pedophiles." She's a great mom. ๐ฅฐ
Speech-to-text particularly aggressive today. "Can you help me punctuate this" turned into "Can you help me punch you in the face." Blood will be shed over proper grammatical structure! ๐ฉธ

My screenwriting partner and I are working on putting together a two-hander right now. These are some of my favorite movies to write (and watch!) Allow me to use recent smash hit Deadpool & Wolverine to demonstrate 3 two-hander fundamentals (don't worry, no spoilers!)

I live to hear the new gigs recorded by my voice actor neighbor. Soooo much better than having a neighbor who maniacally laughs for no reason.
Possessions was shy of cracking the Top 6, but thank you @WeScreenplay for your thoughtful notes that made my horror story better, and congrats to the grand prize winners of the Feature Lab!

Action lines are the primary area of friction in your screenwriting.
That's where a reader gets bored, loses interest, and skips. Yet 99% of screenwriters still don't give them enough attention.
Here are five (really) simple ways to improve your action lines right now. ๐

ON PITCHING
Pitching can be terrifying for a writer, but it is an inescapable and necessary part of the industry. Had a bunch of meetings over the past month with streamers and channels to pitch ideas. Five things I've learned are:
1. Know your story... well! Don't be caught in a situation where you are asked basic story questions and you don't have answers.
2. Have a solid team behind you. A channel wants to know that you are able to execute the idea, from script development to production.
3. Be a visual storyteller. Hook them and tell the story in such a way that they start seeing it on the screen of their minds. You'll be able to tell from their expressions and reactions.
4. Be flexible. Have a definite idea of what the story is and what your non-negotiables are, but be wiling to shift gears to align with their needs and audience.
5. Always be yourself. They are just people like you. There's no need to pretend to impress them. Insincerity is a lot more transparent than you think it is.
What are some of the things you guys have learned about pitching? Please share your best advice in the comments so we can all learn.
