[STATEMENT] AHMED KATHRADA FOUNDATION CONDEMNS HORRIFIC DURBAN MOB KILLING; WARNS AGAINST FLARING XENOPHOBIC VIOLENCE The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation strongly condemns the brutal killing of a man, alleged to have been a foreign national, by a mob in Durban’s CBD. This senseless act of violence comes amid escalating anti-immigrant marches and rhetoric that risk fuelling further xenophobia and vigilantism. No grievance, economic anxiety or political dissatisfaction can ever justify mob justice. Targeting people because of their nationality violates our Constitution and the values of a non-racial, just South Africa. The Foundation calls for an urgent and transparent investigation, with all those responsible — including anyone who incited the violence — held accountable under the law. We urge communities, leaders and civil society to reject inflammatory anti-migrant rhetoric, exercise restraint and challenge unverified information that could trigger further violence. We must stand together against xenophobia and vigilantism. Human dignity and the rule of law must prevail. 📷 Read the full statement: bit.ly/4yytlor #kathylegacy #humanrights #nonracialism #StopXenophobia #JusticeForAll #RuleOfLaw #AhmedKathradaFoundation

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION | STAFF MAYORAL CANDIDATE ENGAGEMENTS The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) today hosted its third staff mayoral candidate engagement ahead of the upcoming City of Johannesburg local government elections, engaging with Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Helen Zille. This engagement forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing staff local government education programme, creating opportunities for constructive dialogue on the policies, priorities and leadership approaches of those seeking public office. Following engagements with the RISE Mzansi and ActionSA mayoral candidates, Lukhona Mnguni and Herman Mashaba, respectively, today’s session continued our commitment to strengthening democratic participation and encouraging informed, active citizenship. As a non-partisan organisation committed to deepening non-racialism, advancing ethical leadership and strengthening accountability, the Foundation believes that meaningful engagement with political leaders is essential to building a local government that is responsive, transparent and accountable to the people of Johannesburg. These engagements will continue in the lead-up to the elections. Next week, AKF staff will engage with the EFF mayoral candidate as we continue to create space for dialogue across the political spectrum. Democracy requires more than participation at the ballot box. It requires an informed and engaged citizenry that asks critical questions, scrutinises political commitments and holds elected leaders accountable. #kathylegacy #activecitizenship #DemocracyInAction #localgovernmentelections #accountability #EthicalLeadership

YOUR BALLOT PAPERS EXPLAINED | KNOW YOUR VOTE. OWN YOUR VOICE. As we prepare for the upcoming Local Government Elections, understanding your ballot papers is an important step towards making an informed choice and participating meaningfully in our democracy. The number of ballot papers you receive at your voting station depends on the type of municipality in which you are registered: - Metropolitan Municipalities: You will receive two ballot papers — a Ward ballot and a Metro Council ballot. - Local Council Municipalities: You will receive three ballot papers — a Ward ballot, a Local Council ballot and a District Council ballot. Knowing the purpose of each ballot helps you understand how your vote contributes to representation and decision-making in your community. At the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, we believe that an informed citizenry is essential to strengthening democracy, promoting accountability and building responsive local government. Know your ballot before you mark it. Make your vote count. Be an active citizen. #ActiveCitizenship #LocalGovernmentElections #DemocracyInAction #KnowYourVote #KathyLegacy

[STATEMENT] The AKF congratulates South African legal pioneer and international jurist, Judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner. This historic recognition honours a lifetime dedicated to human rights, equality, justice and the rule of law. From defending political prisoners during apartheid to serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and advancing accountability through international justice institutions, Judge Pillay has played a pivotal role in strengthening the global pursuit of justice. Her legacy affirms that true and sustainable peace cannot exist without justice, accountability and the equal application of international law, regardless of a nation’s power or influence. Judge Pillay’s connection to the Foundation runs deep. In 2011, she delivered the Second Annual Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Lecture, highlighting the dangers of racism, xenophobia and intolerance, and reminding us of the need to remain vigilant against systems of prejudice and division. At a time when constitutional democracy, multilateralism and international human rights face mounting challenges, her recognition reinforces the importance of defending human dignity, confronting injustice and holding those in power accountable. As a Foundation committed to justice, equality, ethical leadership and non-racialism, we celebrate Judge Pillay’s achievement and the enduring example her life offers to South Africa and the world. True peace is not simply the absence of conflict, it requires the courage to confront injustice and uphold the rule of law. [STATEMENT] The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) welcomes the landmark Constitutional Court ruling affirming the rights of asylum seekers and striking down unconstitutional provisions of the Refugees Act. The judgment is a significant victory for human dignity, international human rights and the rule of law, reaffirming that procedural barriers and administrative technicalities cannot be used to prevent vulnerable people from having their claims for protection fairly considered. The Foundation strongly supports the Court’s reaffirmation of the principle of non-refoulement — ensuring that individuals are not returned to countries where they face persecution, torture or death. As a Foundation committed to justice, equality, human dignity and non-racialism, we believe South Africa’s constitutional democracy must protect the most vulnerable and ensure that our institutions uphold the values of our Constitution. We further caution against attempts to use this ruling to manufacture fear, xenophobia or division within our communities. Upholding constitutional protections for asylum seekers is not a rejection of lawful immigration regulation; it is a call for systems that are fair, transparent, just and human-rights compliant. South Africa’s strength lies in its commitment to justice for the most vulnerable. CENTENARY LAUNCH INSIGHTS | Obakeng Kgatshe on Building a generation of activists What does Ahmed Kathrada’s youth activism mean for young people today? As part of our Ahmed Kathrada Centenary Launch Insights Series, we continue sharing key reflections from the addresses and contributions that shaped the launch at Liliesleaf — bringing these ideas to those who could not attend and opening up the conversation beyond the day itself. In her address, Obakeng Kgatshe, Youth Leadership and Activism Programme Manager, reminded us that before Ahmed Kathrada became the statesman we remember, he was a young person who saw injustice and chose to act. That is the spirit behind the Foundation’s vision for the journey towards 2029: not simply to celebrate a legacy, but to build on it. From growing our network to 100 youth clubs, supporting youth-led community action and developing young activists, to expanding Democracy Circles, Circles of Resistance and opportunities for intergenerational learning — the goal is to create meaningful pathways for young people to organise, participate and shape their communities. The most powerful way to honour Young Kathy is not only to remember the activist he was, but to help nurture the activists of today and tomorrow. #KathyLegacy #AhmedKathradaCentenary #YouthActivism #ActiveCitizenship #YouthLeadership

CENTENARY LAUNCH INSIGHTS | Judge Steven Majiedt on Preserving the Legacy of Rivonia What can the Rivonia Trial teach us about the legacy we carry forward? As part of our Ahmed Kathrada Centenary Launch Insights Series, we’ll share key reflections from the keynote addresses and contributions that shaped the launch — creating an opportunity for those who could not attend to engage with the ideas and lessons shared on the day. In his Heritage Day address, Judge Steven Majeidt reflected on the significance of Courtroom C and the Rivonia Trialists’ cell at the Palace of Justice — spaces that hold tangible memories of South Africa’s liberation struggle. He highlighted the urgent need to preserve these sites and transform them into spaces for education, research, oral history and reflection, connecting the history of Rivonia to our Constitution, human rights, democracy and the rule of law. As we journey towards Ahmed Kathrada’s birth centenary in 2029, preserving these stories is not simply about remembering the past. It is about ensuring that the values and sacrifices that shaped our democracy continue to inform and inspire future generations. #KathyLegacy #AhmedKathradaCentenary #RivoniaTrial #HeritageDay #ActiveCitizenship

CENTENARY LAUNCH INSIGHTS | Mac Maharaj on courage and responsibility. “Institutions do not have courage. People do.” As part of our Ahmed Kathrada Centenary Launch Insights Series, we share key reflections from the keynote addresses and contributions that shaped the launch — extending these conversations to those who could not join us on the day. In his address, Mac Maharaj reflected on one of the most enduring lessons from Ahmed Kathrada’s life: the responsibility to speak when the values we stand for are at risk. Drawing on Kathy’s decision to speak out in 2016, he explored the relationship between constitutional democracy, leadership, integrity and individual responsibility. Institutions and constitutional safeguards are essential to democracy, but their effectiveness ultimately depends on the people entrusted to uphold them. Kathy’s example reminds us that loyalty cannot require silence when fundamental principles are at stake. As we journey towards Ahmed Kathrada’s centenary in 2029, this reflection challenges us to consider what his legacy asks of each generation — to accept responsibility, stand by principle and have the courage to speak when it matters. #KathyLegacy #AhmedKathradaCentenary #ConstitutionalDemocracy #ActiveCitizenship #CourageAndIntegrity

Today, we hosted the next leg of our Legacy Fundraising Breakfast Series, bringing together leaders, professionals and organisations from across diverse business sectors for a meaningful conversation on the role of transport in South Africa’s economic future. Our guest speaker, Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy , unpacked the critical relationship between freight, rail and the broader logistics system, highlighting how efficient transport infrastructure can reduce costs, improve competitiveness and strengthen the movement of goods to local and international markets. The conversation also explored the importance of private-sector participation in unlocking investment, improving infrastructure and supporting the reform of South Africa’s freight logistics system. This aligns with the Department of Transport’s broader reform agenda, which includes opening freight rail to private operators, increasing the volume of freight moved by rail and advancing public-private participation across strategic rail and port projects. With South Africa targeting 250 million tonnes of freight moved by rail annually by 2030, the conversation reinforced that transport is not simply about moving people and goods — it is about enabling trade, investment, jobs and inclusive economic growth. The breakfast provided a valuable space for business, government and other stakeholders to engage, exchange perspectives and consider the role each sector can play in building a more connected, competitive and inclusive economy. As we honour the legacy of Ahmed Kathrada, we remain committed to creating spaces for meaningful dialogue, ethical leadership and active citizenship — conversations that connect our history to the work of building a better future. #LegacyBreakfastSeries #KathyLegacy #UnlockingEconomicGrowth

🤝 WORKING TOGETHER TO REBUILD JOHANNESBURG I have just concluded an important engagement with @AhmedKathradaF and @TheJCA_ in Lenasia, where we discussed the current state of the City of Joburg and the urgent need to restore the City. I was also honoured to tour the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Museum, which houses significant archives preserving the life, struggles and legacy of Ahmed Kathrada and our country’s journey to democracy. These archives, carefully compiled and preserved by the Foundation’s dedicated team, are an important reminder of where we come from. As ActionSA, we recognise that rebuilding this City will require government to work closely with civil society, business, communities and other stakeholders. Our approach will be to bring these sectors together, restore effective governance and create an environment that attracts investment, supports businesses and creates opportunities for residents while delivering quality service delivery for All. #UnfinishedBusiness #OperationFixJoburg

[STATEMENT] The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF) condemns the horrific Islamophobic and racist attack against Johannesburg content creator Abdur Rahamaan in Norwood and calls for decisive action and accountability in confronting hate speech, bigotry and racism. The incident cannot be dismissed as a simple case of road rage. The threats, racial and anti-Muslim slurs, and weaponisation of the ongoing Gaza conflict represent a deeply troubling manifestation of hate and prejudice that undermines South Africa’s constitutional democracy. The Foundation is deeply concerned by the growing brazenness with which racist behaviour is being displayed publicly. We must reject both local bigotry and the political narratives that seek to deepen racial and social divisions within our diverse society. As a Foundation committed to justice, equality, human dignity and non-racialism, we will continue to stand against racism and call for meaningful accountability when hate and discrimination threaten our constitutional values. In 2029, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will mark the birth centenary of Ahmed Kathrada — a life that continues to offer lessons in courage, humility, justice and human dignity. Under the theme “Ignite – Deepen – Act”, the centenary journey will create space for reflection, learning and action, connecting the lessons of our liberation history with the responsibilities of citizens today. The Foundation formally began its roadmap towards 2029 on Kathrada’s 97th birth anniversary in August 2026.
