the mathematicians pushing back on AI say that it might help with proofs, but not our HUMAN UNDERSTANDING of math. so I got curious how chess players think AI engines help them better understand chess. and found this clip of Magnus Carlsen: โ€œthe neural nets have improved our understanding of the game immensely.โ€ watch his HUMILITY towards these engines: โ€œitโ€™s just that my understanding is not good enough. And that is useful.โ€ โ€œI rarely play against engines at all because they just make me feel so stupid and useless.โ€
Wow, over 1,000 mathematicians have now joined the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM), committing to: > NOT publish AI generated math papers > NOT work with frontier labs > 654 of them went even further to NOT even use AI in their research, at all

One of the largest disinformation campaigns in recent years is now unfolding on the X platform. This large-scale bot, troll farm and paid influencer campaign is aimed at deflecting blame away from those that throttled Ukraine's Starshield/Starlink access onto Ukraine itself.

US energy company execs have resigned in disgust as the Trump family is caught secretly expediting the funneling of $25 billion from a sanctioned Russian energy giant in exchange for allowing Russians to obtain a natural gas project in Alaska. According to investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times, Russia's Novatek allegedly concealed its financial involvement in the American project through a UAE-linked intermediary. Gentry Beach, a longtime Trump ally and close friend of Donald Trump Jr., signed an agreement with Novatek to pursue natural gas development in Alaska. Reuters documented the arrangement in February. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin discussed this cooperation on the Alaska energy project with Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The controversy deepened when Polar Train LNG's CEO, Joel Riddle, raised concerns about concealed Russian financing and possible sanctions violations. He departed in September, followed by other senior executives. The Financial Times also described discussions about a potential arrangement under which Novatek would provide technology for the Alaska project in exchange for sanctions relief benefiting its Arctic LNG 2 development in Siberia. According to The New York Times, Riddle and two other departing executives warned the Trump administration about the Russian financing and urged officials to investigate. The White House maintains that the project was mentioned only briefly and that no detailed discussions took place. There is no established evidence that Kushner or Witkoff knew about the allegedly concealed financing. Polar Train LNG denies wrongdoing. The central question is how a sanctioned Russian energy company became involved in a major American energy venture while Putin was discussing potential economic cooperation with Trump's representatives and a longtime Trump family associate was pursuing a separate agreement with the same Russian company. Selling Alaska to the Russians or selling Ukraine to the Russians - to the Trump family it's all the same. ft.com/content/e9cfbfbb-e65aโ€ฆ

France is trying to come to terms with a disturbing new development tonight -ย  a terrorist attack on black people and muslims in a town just south west of Paris. President Emmanuel Macron travelled to Trappes soon after the attack which killed one person and wounded four others, including a 12 years old girl. Macron said: โ€˜This is a turning point - the first time in our Republic that people have been targeted in a terrorist attack for the colour of their skin.โ€™ 1/ lemonde.fr/societe/live/2026โ€ฆ

If the #Malfoid trend has shown me anything, it's this - we are fast approaching a time where people will judge a work based on its merits and not by how it was made. And those people who cannot, will be regarded as ignorant bigots and luddites like countless other groups throughout history. And I'll go one step further, which is sure to piss off a great deal of you. I don't care at this point. I would rather watch an AI product like this than sit through any insufferable corpo slop like Amazon's Rings of Power or Disney's Star Wars ever again! This small production had more heart, more thought, and yes! More talent behind it than either of the two storytelling abortions mentioned above ever had. You want to tell stories in a traditional way, fine. Power to you! You want to use AI to tell stories, fine. Power to you as well! May the story with the best ideas, most engaging characters, and most compelling plot win. That's all I want. Good storytelling once again. Who knew that a silly Harry Potter genderswap would show the power and creativity of AI?

I donโ€™t think Europeans fully appreciate what is happening to the European Union right now. The EU is under an extraordinary, multi-front assault, both from outside and from within. And I struggle to think of another period in its history when so many powerful actors had an interest in weakening it simultaneously. Russia has spent years waging hybrid warfare against Europe. Weaponised migration, sabotage, cyberattacks, coordinated disinformation campaigns, bot networks and political interference. The objective is clear: undermine trust in democratic institutions, deepen social divisions and weaken European unity. China has different motivations, primarily economic and geopolitical. A fragmented Europe is easier to pressure, easier to negotiate with individually and less capable of defending its economic interests. And then there is the United States. Perhaps the most disturbing development of all. Under Trump and MAGA, a country that helped rebuild the old continent and then spent decades supporting European integration now has an administration openly hostile to much of what the EU represents. Its own National Security Strategy even calls for cultivating resistance to Europeโ€™s current political direction. Think about that for a moment. Meanwhile, within Europe, parts of the far right and far left amplify these divisions, whether through ideological alignment, political opportunism or outright sympathy for authoritarian regimes. This doesnโ€™t mean Russia, China and MAGA are all following some jointly coordinated master plan. They donโ€™t have to. Their interests increasingly overlap, and Europeโ€™s internal divisions make their work considerably easier. What makes this particularly alarming is what is actually at stake. For all its flaws, the EU remains one of the worldโ€™s most consequential projects built around liberal democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and cooperation between nations. At a time when authoritarianism is gaining ground and even longstanding democracies are showing disturbing tendencies, that matters enormously. Europe is far from perfect. Its bureaucracy, indecision and inability to act decisively are real problems. But the answer cannot be to retreat into 27 competing nation-states, each too small to meaningfully influence a world increasingly dominated by continental powers. Quite the opposite. Europe needs deeper integration, stronger common institutions, genuine strategic autonomy and the political courage to defend its interests and values. Because fragmentation is precisely what so many external actors want. And perhaps thatโ€™s the central irony of our time: people are being deliberately manipulated into believing that the reverse is true โ€” that national identity and sovereignty can only be protected by weakening European cooperation. In reality, a divided Europe is less sovereign, less secure and far easier for outside powers to pressure. Therefore the very thing that will make Europe stronger is the thing its adversaries are working hardest to prevent. A united Europe is a geopolitical power. A divided Europe is a collection of countries waiting to be played against one another.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Zelenskyy delivers a blunt message to the United States: โ€œJust give us Starlink back. If you refuse, Ukraine will survive. We will continue defending ourselves with or without it. But why would you restrict a country fighting for its survival? Why make it harder for us to defend our people? I simply cannot understand the reasoning behind this decision. It is a mistake.โ€ Ukraine isnโ€™t asking America to fight its war. Itโ€™s asking America not to stand in the way of its defense.

Just to be clear about what happened here: - Trump cut a deal with Putin that will route ~$4B of American dollars to Russia. That money will be used to fund the war. - Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" that was probably Putin's idea, surprised the Ukrainians, is structured to benefit Russia, and was immediately broken by the Russian military. - When Zelensky spoke candidly about these terrible deals, the US cut off Starlink access in ways that made it harder for Ukraine to intercept Russian drones, and seemingly withheld intel about ballistic missile attacks. - Last week alone, Russia killed more than 150 civilians in Ukraine, including 33 in one strike on a bus stop. Trump is de facto asking @ZelenskyyUa to surrender. Zelensky can throw on a suit, he can endure lectures from whiny little bitches like @JDVance, but he can't lay down and die just because Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize.
I fear that President Zelensky has gotten terrible advice on handling his relations with President Trump, and at the absolute worst possible time before what looks like a very difficult winter.

Well-known Ukrainian military aerial reconnaissance specialist Oleksandr "Serg Marco" Karpiuk writes on Facebook: "...Starlink is a civilian communications system. And SpaceX is responsible for its civilian use. Standard Starlink terminals currently have a default speed limit of 22 m/s. To enable flight at speeds above 22 m/s, Ukraine signed contracts for Starshield, which is overseen by the Pentagon. This is already a military system, with Starlink terminals that offer greater functionality, although the accounts are considerably more expensive. And it was the Pentagon that did two things in a single day: restricted intelligence sharing and changed the parameters of Starshield accounts. This was a decision by the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth. Clearly on Trump's orders...." Maybe this is the key to understanding what exactly happened.
