Very disappointed in the lack of support from @flightcentreAU After hours of phone calls and trying to get compassionate support to cancel or change the booking till 2026 we’re told all they can do is upgrade us to premium economy at our expense. I’ll never use this company again

Incredible presentation about effective curriculum from Ben Jensen. There’s so much work to do - Ben has helped us to see where we need to go. Thinking about @PepsMccrea talk on motivation to help us motivate teachers to make the necessary changes. Exciting times! #researchEDNewy

I’m loving Reading Reconsidered by @Doug_Lemov so much to help answer the question of how to teach reading. Have a primary text that’s a powerful, rigorous & engaging text. Carefully consider using secondary texts for context, provide background, show a contrast, develop ideas

Also can embed poetry, song lyrics, excerpts from more challenging fiction. When embedding text: decide when you’re going to read other texts, use interlocking questions to enhance synergy between texts, adapt, combine and amend nonfiction articles, except relevant sections

Take time to read aloud fiction & NF to students of all ages. To increase background knowledge (which we know helps comprehension): embed NF throughout the primary F text, ask overlapping questions, use knowledge based analytical questions, read in batches, try non text formats

I’ve just finished reading The Knowledge Gap by @natwexler. It’s an important read in my ever growing understanding of reading instruction & knowledge rich curriculums.

Thinking a lot about a knowledge-rich curriculum as I read the excellent The knowledge Gap by @natwexler I wonder if the reason kids don’t have an answer to parents’ question “what did you learn at school?” Is because they don’t remember actually learning anything of interest

Loving being at Research Conversations Christian Education – a conference close to my heart. Listening to the excellent @LynnSwaner1 giving her keynote about flourishing schools. So inspired by her words. #RESCON23

I just finished listening to this excellent, while sometimes disturbing, series of six podcasts about teaching reading. I am thankful for what we now know about the best way to teach children to read. podcasts.apple.com/au/podcas…

Enjoying rereading Why Don’t Students like School Background knowledge is important in reading comprehension: provides vocab, bridges logical gaps in writing, allows chunking & leaves room in working memory, guides interpretation of ambiguous sentences
