All the evidence will be in the report and presentations - this is the conclusion. This is about adult use (age 17+) of public libraries in America

Fascinating data from our Freckle survey (US, April 25)
Nearly half (46%) of library circulations are digital. (UK 8%)... library use is down by half in 12 years. Circulations are skewed to new fiction and lacking in back-list nonfiction. Funding is still £15bn and rising.
Yet again we see a local council using completely nonsensical arguments to defend closure of their libraries. Yet no one from @CILIPinfo @libsconnected @DcmsLibraries @ace_national - pointing out the glaringly obvious- so that local people can see.

Was obvious during our COVID research that public library users are at best indifferent to ebooks. Any authority pretending to themselves it's a viable strategy to replace physical libraries with them isn't interested in seriously delivering a library service.

Simple question for UK public libraries. Is there anyone can tell us how many people used the service in 2023/24 or 2022/23? How much did it cost? How many books were loaned? How many other library services were used? @CILIPinfo @CILIPScotland @libsconnected @ace__london @DCMS

The crisis about public libraries, everywhere, is not about money, or politicians who don't understand the service. It is about the public not understanding the changes that public libraries have made to what they do, over 30 years.

I know of one excellent library authority council in the UK where they are genuinely trying to address this problem in detail, bravely and thoroughly. It will take time, but their work will succeed. We need more to do the same
They simply asked 'How do we reverse the fall?'

I have prepared a very short simple PowerPoint presentation (7 slides) to give to council leaders about their public libraries - if anybody wants it

If anybody wants, I can prepare a PowerPoint presentation to use when approaching leaders of councils.

Alan is making a really important point which is that in an appeal for public money it is SO important to stress that public libraries concentrate on offering books and free. That is the one subject the public understands. This is not about librarians. It’s about ordinary people

The annual number of visits to public libraries in the UK has fallen by 40% since 2018.
That figure first appeared in analysis of the DCMS 'Participation' survey and is echoed in the data returned by councils to CIPFA for 2022/23
Half of library book lending is now to children

Next month we will see the public library performance for the year to March 2020. Use will have fallen again
During 20/21 and the lockdowns it will have fallen much further, probably to just 5-10% of previous years
The big challenge will be to restore its public reputation
