We agree and have worked with several teams building brain foundation models. They turned to the Kernel Flow device, the only scalable, plug-and-play whole-head TD-fNIRS device on the market, because they hit a ceiling with EEG alone. TD-fNIRS measures a hemodynamic proxy of neural activity, the same signal that is used by functional MRI, and has been shown to relate to complex brain states and mental representations. Every non-invasive modality has its trade-offs. EEG captures sub-millisecond electrical dynamics, while TD-fNIRS provides localized hemodynamic state data. Because they measure distinct physiological processes with largely independent noise profiles, pairing them makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Our next system now pairs whole scalp TD-fNIRS with whole scalp, 30-channel EEG. It is the best hardware and platform to build the next generation of brain foundation models and neuro-AI applications. It is a proven platform, with already 40,000 hours of brain data collected across our partners. And while the NVIDIA comparison is a lot to live up to, it may well be on point for what we have built!
