In 342 BC, a Chinese general named Pang Juan chased a retreating enemy army into a narrow valley at a place called Maling. Night fell. Up ahead, he saw a large tree that had been stripped of its bark, with writing carved into the bare wood. He called for a torch so he could read it. The message said: Pang Juan dies beneath this tree. The torch was the signal. Thousands of crossbowmen hidden on the slopes had been told to shoot the moment they saw a light. The valley erupted. Pang Juan's army was destroyed, and according to the historian Sima Qian, Pang Juan killed himself on the spot. The man who set the trap was Sun Bin, a strategist Pang Juan had once betrayed and had mutilated out of jealousy. His weapon of revenge was one China had already mastered while most of the world was still throwing spears: the crossbow. The Chinese crossbow's real genius was a small bronze box in the stock, the trigger mechanism. It held the string under enormous tension and released it with a light pull of a finger. That meant a soldier didn't need years of training like an archer did. Give a farmer a crossbow, teach him to aim, and in a short time he was lethal. And China built them on an industrial scale. Bronze triggers were cast to standardized patterns, so parts could be made in large batches. Excavations around the tomb of the First Emperor, the site of the Terracotta Army, have turned up huge numbers of crossbow triggers. Han dynasty armies later fielded masses of crossbowmen against the Xiongnu horsemen on the northern frontier. The Chinese even built repeating crossbows. One is usually credited to the famous strategist Zhuge Liang in the 200s AD, but archaeologists have found a simpler repeating crossbow in a tomb dating back to around the 4th century BC, centuries before him. Europe eventually caught up. By the Middle Ages the crossbow was so feared there that in 1139, a Church council tried to ban its use against Christians. Nobody listened. China had been using it to win wars for more than a thousand years by then.

In 321 BC, the general Ptolemy I Soter hijacked Alexander the Great’s extravagant funeral procession in Syria, diverting his body to Egypt to legitimize his own rule and spark the First War of the Successors... Alexander the Great died in Babylon in 323 BC without a clear heir. His imperial regent, Perdiccas, wanted to transport Alexander’s body back to Macedonia to bury him with his royal ancestors at Aegae, which would cement Perdiccas's supreme power over the empire. It took two years to build a massive, gold-adorned funeral carriage pulled by 64 mules draped in golden bells and jeweled collars. . . . As the dead king rode home on a golden carriage drawn by sixty-four mules, each wearing a gilded crown and two gold bells. Ptolemy conspired with Arrhidaeus (general commanding the cortege) to intercept the slow-moving convoy as it traveled through the Levant/Syria. When Perdiccas found out and sent a light-armed task force to chase them down, Ptolemy met the procession near Damascus with a heavily armed mercenary army to block Perdiccas and claim the body. . . . Ptolemy was waiting in Egypt. He had grown up at court beside Alexander, and as a young man he had been sent into exile for taking the prince's side in a quarrel with his father. Now he governed Egypt, and he saw something the other generals were slow to see, that whoever buried Alexander would look like his heir. A seer named Aristander had already declared that the land which received the body would be happy and never conquered. When the carriage reached Syria in 321 BC, Ptolemy met it with an army and turned it south. Perdiccas, the regent who held the dead king's signet ring, sent men after it. The writer Aelian later told what happened next. Ptolemy, he said, laid a lifelike figure dressed in Alexander's royal robes on a couch of silver, gold, and ivory, and let the pursuers find it while the real body went on secretly toward Egypt. Perdiccas seized the figure and called off the chase. Ptolemy successfully brought Alexander’s body to Egypt—first interring it in Memphis and later moving it to a grand tomb in Alexandria. Possessing the conqueror's corpse gave Ptolemy the divine legitimacy needed to establish the 300-year Ptolemaic dynasty and triggered open war among the generals. He did not learn the truth until it was too late to catch anyone. Alexander had asked to rest at the desert oracle of Zeus Ammon, but Ptolemy buried him at Memphis instead. #archaeohistories

Claude Code found 17,342 of my daughter's photos on a server in Hangzhou. she's 16. she had her Hidden album locked with Face ID and thought nobody could see it. an app she downloaded from the App Store has been sending every photo on her phone to China for 10 months. i checked her two friends' phones the same night. same app. same server. her phone was lagging so i connected it to my MacBook. Claude Code flagged an app called "GlowCam - Beauty Filter" with 4.2 million downloads. it was uploading her entire photo library every 6 hours between 1am and 5am while she was sleeping. → app → "GlowCam - Beauty Filter" (4.2M downloads, 4.7 stars) → server → 112.17.***.63 → location → Hangzhou, China → total files uploaded → 17,342 → active since → January 2026 → permissions → camera, photos, microphone, location every photo she ever took. every screenshot. every image anyone ever sent her. everything from her Hidden album that she locked with Face ID thinking it was safe. Face ID only stops a person who picks up the phone. an app with Full Access to Photos opens the Hidden album like any other folder. there's no green dot for that. two of her friends were at our house that evening. i asked them to let me check their phones. both had GlowCam installed. → my daughter's iPhone 16 Pro Max → 17,342 files uploaded to Hangzhou → her friend's iPhone 15 → 9,740 files uploaded to the same server → her friend's iPhone 15 → 6,210 files uploaded since April 3 phones on my kitchen table all sending photos to the same folder in China. i asked Claude Code to trace where the files went. it found photos from all 3 phones on a site that sells stolen photo libraries sorted by age and location. → www.le***dumpcc → their city listed, folders tagged "16-19" → tme/ph***vault_cn (41,000+ subscribers) → folder link shared 2 weeks ago → buyer access → $8 per library someone paid $8 per library. 3 libraries from 3 teenage girls. Apple approved the app that made it possible. then Claude Code scanned every other app on all 3 phones and found 2 more doing the same thing. → "PhotoRoom — Background Eraser" → uploading to a server in Jakarta → "FaceTune Lite — Selfie Editor" → uploading to a server in Mumbai what Claude Code did on all 3 phones: → killed every upload process and purged all caches → revoked Full Access from every photo app → switched everything to "Limited Access" → filed DMCA takedowns on the site and the telegram channel → turned on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud on all 3 accounts the site took the photos down in 72 hours. the telegram channel is still up. i called both their parents that night. i told all 3 girls the apps were slowing their phones and i deleted them. none of them know what i actually found. if your kid has a beauty filter or photo editor on their phone right now there's a real chance it's doing exactly this. check Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos and count how many apps have "Full Access." every single one can read the Hidden album, the Recently Deleted folder, and every photo your kid has ever taken. my daughter had 11 apps with Full Access. she needed 2. the prompt is in the first reply. run it on every phone in your house tonight. takes 3 minutes. save it and send it to every parent you know.
