Why does Pakistan struggle to boost exports and narrow its trade deficit? As with many entrenched economic problems, the answer lies largely in political economy - I explain below - full video is in reply

Mohmand Dam cost jumps 115% Pakistan has reassessed the cost of the under-construction Mohmand Dam at a staggering Rs666 billion, an increase of 115% in the past eight years, which authorities largely attributed to rupee devaluation after 2018. Mohmand is one of the three largest reservoirs Islamabad is building to deal with Indian water aggression. tribune.com.pk/story/2636615…

India has turned the bulldozer into a naked weapon of ethno-religious dominance. The state is systematically razing Muslim homes and mosques to stage collective humiliation and force the expulsion of a targeted minority. Around the century-old Race Course Mosque in New Delhi, more than 700 families were displaced under a demolition drive while in Assam the BJP government has, within two days, removed more than 1100 Bengali Muslim households across Nagaon, Golaghat and Hojai and razed more than 10 mosques. These operations instantiate a form of sovereign violence that converts the capacity to render populations homeless into public proof of political will. The pattern possesses a documented and cumulative history. Amnesty International recorded more than 128 demolitions across Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh between April and June 2022 that affected at 617 people in the aftermath of communal violence and protest. The investigation established selective targeting of Muslim properties, frequent absence of adequate notice or due process and consequent loss of both shelter and livelihood. From Jahangirpuri in Delhi to Khargone in Madhya Pradesh and across subsequent drives in BJP-ruled states, the bulldozer has become a standing feature of governance in which Muslims repeatedly absorb the material costs of collective suspicion. In Assam alone, official data compiled by Scroll indicate that approximately 19000 families, mostly Muslims, have been evicted from their lands during the BJP’s decade in power. The present order has converted the dispossession muslims into a public spectacle of majoritarian consent. It has turned the destruction of muslim homes into a ritual of popular approval and collective humiliation. BJP’s majoritarian project does not exhaust itself in rhetorical exclusion or the narrowing of citizenship. It operates through the routine administrative determination of who may retain a dwelling, who may worship without threat of clearance and whose historical presence may be treated as disposable. The repeated reduction of minority homes and mosques to rubble enacts a coercive recomposition of the social and demographic terrain thereby rendering Muslim existence precarious and exerting extreme pressure towards displacement and marginalization. These measures form part of a broader apparatus of persecution whose cumulative logic raises serious questions about the conditions under which ethnic cleansing and genocidal processes can advance. Indian Muslims should not be required to witness the rubble of their own dwellings before the political character of this dispossession is recognized.

Chinese Troops learn from Pakistan's Army Counter-Terrorism experience 🇨🇳🇵🇰 A Chinese Soldier says: "Having seen real combat, the Pakistani army has a wealth of experience worth learning from. For instance, when we throw grenades into a room, we aim for distance; they throw them to strike the ground, where they ricochet multiple times at high speed instead of remaining stationary. This effectively prevents the enemy from picking them up and throwing them back. Through these days of training, both sides shared combat tactics and experience, further refining our maneuvers and truly enhancing our joint counterterrorism capabilities."

My take on the deadly coordinated attacks in #Gwadar The #Balochistan_Liberation_Front (#BLF) says it is carrying out deadly coordinated attacks in Gwadar, Pakistan’s emerging port city and the site of major #Chinese investment. Pakistani security forces say three to four militants have been killed so far. The attacks come days after Pakistan closed its border with #Iran, although the reasons for the closure remain unclear. But the timing of these attacks in Gwadar is important. Gwadar’s strategic importance has grown dramatically in recent months due to severe disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iran-U.S. conflict has brought greater attention to Gwadar Port, with reports of dozens of vessels diverting cargo there amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. In April 2026, Gwadar Port handled approximately 11,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), a 32.53% increase over the 8,300 TEUs processed in all of 2025. Value Chain Asia said Gwadar handled a year’s worth of containers in one Month. This sudden surge marks the first time the deep-water facility has handled commercial cargo at such a large scale. As of now, it remains unclear whether this increase will remain like this; however, the ongoing military escalation in the region is giving Gwadar greater prominence as an alternative logistical point. The timing of the #BLF carrying out deadly attacks inside Gwadar could therefore help bring the group greater international attention. In such circumstances, an armed group’s effectiveness is not necessarily measured by the number of casualties inflicted or the amount of damage caused. The ability to penetrate a strategically important location such as Gwadar, even temporarily, can itself carry huge symbolic value. Meanwhile, lately a broader trend has also emerged among #Baloch armed groups. Since 2022, we are seeing an uptick in lethal, coordinated attacks. Such deadly VBIEDs were traditionally carried out by the Baloch Liberation Army (#BLA), particularly its suicide-attack unit, the Majeed Brigade. The BLF now appears to be adopting the same tactics. Oct 22 attacks in Gwadar are likely to attract international attention because of the city’s links to China, its renewed strategic significance amid the #IranWar, and the wider tensions happening in the Strait of Hormuz. Historically, Baloch armed groups have sought to draw attention to grievances concerning political representation, economic rights, and Baloch identity through such attacks in #Balochistan. But their increasingly coordinated attacks in places like Gwadar and Chagai, sites of international investment and attention, signal an attempt to extend their reach and push the Baloch conflict more prominently onto the international discussions.

While Social media is buzzing with opinions on inconsequential ‘body language’, analysing broader Iran -US deadlock can be difficult but very interesting . Overall, a diplomatic breakthrough remains distant while the chances of wide spread regional conflict are increasing by the day. Many commentators are of the view that Iran is playing a hardball. The popular assessments point out Iran‘s ungratefulness towards mediators and miscalculations towards combined US-Israel potential. Many analysts also find Iran’s tough, aggressive and uncompromising stance risky/ flawed. Elsewhere, Iran’s posture is being pinned at religiously motivated guidance of clergy and extremist mindset of IRGC. Perhaps most of these assessments are somewhat off the mark. Iranian political- military leadership is playing a calculated game while leveraging their national resilience, invisible support from dominant global actors and decisive military performance. As on battlefield, in diplomacy too one can only manoeuvre when there is space available. For Iran, failures of opponents and their own achievements (according their reckoning) do provide them essential space. How accurate is this Iranian assessment will only be proven with time, however, as of today Iranian leadership assumes they have sufficient space particularly until 4th of November and hence, their quest for gaining position of strength for a deal on own terms. On the other side, US having tried most of the military options available alongside unprecedented diplomatic and economic coercion also continues to seek position of strength. As often, the pursuit of such position of strength post a military conflict proves ruthless and unending. Caught in the middle, international community is facing the negative fallouts of recklessness of both sides. Is space for further manoeuvring available to Iranian leadership, what could be their assessment of an end to this pursuit is a million dollar question. In my opinion, few geo-political outcomes of February 2026 conflict have strengthened Iranian assessment of space for manoeuvre. Few important of ones are:- First, they precisely understand that illegal and blatant military aggression against Iran seriously damaged Trump, politically and at the same time has led to Israel’s isolation internationally. While Trump is feeling the heat in run up to 4th of November in terms of huge loss of political capital, Israel in medium to long-term will have to face serious geopolitical ramifications. The victim narrative which Israel propagated so successfully for decades is no more popular in the world. Iran can clearly see a window till 4th of November because of US- Israel’s inability to initiate another cycle of violence through military application. Second, regionally Iran has demonstrated its superior military capabilities, alone as well as through the combined capacity with its allies. Iranian leadership fully understands neither US nor any of the Middle Eastern states( including their allies) can go full hog against their multi directional drone / missile targeting. They are confident of perpetuating influence of strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandeb on global economy. Moreover, being confident of enforcing response dilemma as well as inadequacy on Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, UAE and Qatar ; Iran believes it enjoys freedom of action in the region ( an assumption that will only worsen existing fault lines in the region) . 1/2
