Fascinating piece in today’s NYT co-authored by my colleague @ben_valenta on how fandom acts as an antidote to hyper-partisanship.
This work is part of an exciting partnership among Harvard, Fox Sports and MLB to explore how fandom benefits us all.

NFL Week 1 ratings headlines have been pretty harsh but in the end total viewing of Week 1 was actually up very slightly over last year. Not unexpected and not exactly a crisis.
It was shocking to see this. My heart hurts for the families, friends, and coworkers who suffered this great loss.

The media industry is plagued by transactional fraud on an epic scale. The best way to combat it is with credible, transparent data. Anything that moves our business more toward a transparent market can only be good news.

I applaud Nielsen for their clear communication to clients today that “Mixing internal or third-party data with Nielsen metrics to make comparative statements in the press is not permissible.”
Hopefully this clear, fair policy will be rigorously enforced during football season.

The World Cup Final averaged 66.4 million viewers in the U.S. on FOX and Telemundo combined.
42.5 million on FOX. 23.9 million on Telemundo.
Other than Super Bowls, this is the largest sports audience since the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Forbes estimates the world’s 50 highest-earning creators made a combined $1.02 billion between March 2025 and March 2026. voronoiapp.com/pop-culture/R…

Through the quarterfinals 120.7 million Americans have watched the World Cup on FOX, FS1 and Tubi.
In 2025, Americans spent ~$167 billion dollars on sports betting.
To put that into perspective, Americans spent $158B on pet care - meaning we spent $9B more betting on sports than we did feeding our cats, grooming our dogs, and buying wheels for our hamsters.
Even more mind-blowing to me, U.S. consumer spending on video games was $60.7B in 2025. Sports betting was nearly 2.8X that.

Again, when the final “big data” numbers come in and we are able to combine English and Spanish viewing this will be the biggest non-NFL event in many years.

When the final “big data” numbers come in it’ll be north of 25 million. Certainly holds its own with CFB, NBA, MLB championship audiences. Love to see it.

Pope Leo has had some profound things to say about sports recently. Certainly appreciate him helping to promote tomorrow’s kickoff of the World Cup.
I’m hoping the Holy Father will weigh in on key viewership trends during the tournament. I’ll take all the help I can get.
The World Cup begins tomorrow, and many will watch the matches. Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget: life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together. Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life. #ApostolicJourney
