I've been asked, "Why destined ai?" Here is a quick post about how I got to this point and how @ATLTechVillage and @zaneventurefund @DestinedAi
Are part of that journey #MachineLearning

Gerald Carter (@LGcarter) open-sourced Hurston-1, a TTS model for accented English built with phone-based voice agents in mind.
He founded Destined AI after seeing AI struggle with Southern US accents. Since 2021, his Atlanta team has recorded paid, consenting speakers from the American South and across Africa.
"Nobody handed us a funding round to do this, so we built it ourselves."
The model is named after Zora Neale Hurston, the writer and anthropologist who traveled the American South recording Black communities' stories, songs, and speech.
Hurston-1 is a 3B-parameter LoRA fine-tune of @mayaresearch_ai's Maya1 on ~190 hours of speech, including ~10 hours of real voice-agent calls.
- Voice by description — gender, age, 9 accents, style, and pace.
- Phone mode — post-synthesis 8 kHz G.711 audio for Twilio.
- Voice-agent testing — generate accented callers to find where speech recognition and agent workflows struggle.
In 54 blind comparisons, listeners preferred Hurston-1 over base Maya1 for sounding like a real person with the requested accent, 78% to 6% (team-reported).
Voices can vary between generations, so it's better suited to synthetic caller testing than maintaining one consistent voice.
Open weights under Apache-2.0. Training corpus not released.

1/ Ask an AI voice for a Southern accent. You will usually get American English with the South sanded off.
We just open-sourced a voice model that actually speaks it, plus Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan and South African accented English. Built for the phone.
🤯
5/ Apache-2.0. Describe the voice in plain words. No cloning, on purpose.

2/ Those accents come from places home to about 650 million people. Most open voice models offer none of them. That is not a technical limit. It is a data decision.

The world of R&D is forking into two paths: the token-abundant research, and the token-starved research. The future is in the former - evidentially, the progress by today's top AI industry teams and neolabs is breathtaking, where researchers’ human brilliance is super charged by AI’s assistance. Every research university president should be reading this report and reflecting on what the future of higher education research should be.

Inkling-Small is comparable to Inkling at a quarter the size. Weights are open, fine-tunable on Tinker today. Look forward to seeing what people make with it.
Today, we are releasing Inkling-Small.
Inkling-Small achieves comparable performance to Inkling at a quarter of its size. It features 276B total parameters, 12B active. We are making the full weights available.

Fine-tune it on Tinker today, or chat with it in text, image, and audio on Tinker Playground.

Our first model, Inkling. Trained from scratch, weights are open, fine-tunable on Tinker today.
Today, we are introducing Inkling.
Inkling reasons efficiently across text, image, and audio modalities. We are making the full weights available.

Available today for fine-tuning on Tinker. Play with it in the Inkling Playground. 🧵
I tested this against other finetunes and it had some interesting results. Overall it is a great model for open source. A fine tuned Qwen3.6 still performed better in my test environment- which specifically tests writing style and content matching.
what an absolute huge win for open source AI in america. 1st ever model from OpenAI's ex CTO and its a 1T open model that reasons across text, code, images, video - but the best part isn't even how good it is...
its how you can fine-tune it to create something way better:
> you can adjust the thinking effort
> you can influence the way it approaches a coding problem
> you can perfect token spending so your task costs pennies
this solves a big problem that companies are facing now: they're spending $100Ks - $10Ms when they could just be fine-tuning a "less intelligent" model to do the same task at a fraction of the cost (and often better)
thats why bridgewater's using Thinking Machine's tinker product
i expect to see a lot of folks playing around with this model, finally an alternative to chinese open source!
Thinking Machines is impressive. In a couple hours I just fine tuned my own Qwen3.5-397B model this afternoon.
Fast usable multimodal is also going to enable very mind-blowing personal AI.
People talk, listen, watch, think, and collaborate at the same time, in real time. We've designed an AI that works with people the same way.
We share our approach, early results, and a quick look at our model in action.

Founder closed a $15m Series A (top tier VC) and 6 months later, plans to return the cash to investors. Feels like long term, Claude will displace the product / erode the value. This is really happening, most people are not talking about it, it’s kinda wild.

Question for #founders with toddlers... How?
Hi Mat, is there an API or way that I can bulk-check thousands of photos? My site has been scraped but going one by one makes me wonder if we can speed up the process before the two weeks is up. Also, my metadata tool could help.
