The Lion, the Witch, and the $280 Million Train Wreck! Rumor around Hollywood is that Netflix is pulling the plug on The Narnia series before the first movie even hits theaters BUAHAHAHAHA. Netflix. A place where executives can spend hundreds of millions insulting their audience, vandalizing beloved stories, and congratulating themselves for their "courage," only to discover that the one thing they can't do is make a good movie. Who could have seen this coming? Everyone could except for studio executives. Apparently, Netflix's brilliant plan to reinvent Narnia by stuffing it full of modern anti-patriarchy, boss-babe slop is going about as well as I expected. Rumors are that test screenings are a bombing, audiences hate what they've seen, the executives and creatives are fighting, and the budget has reportedly ballooned past $280 MILLION! I expected a train wreck. I just didn't expect the train to derail before leaving the station. The first mistake was thinking Barbie's success made Greta Gerwig some kind of filmmaking genius. The movie made a billion dollars, so naturally she's the next Peter Jackson! Never mind that people went to see BARBIE! They went for nostalgia, curiosity, and most of all Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling. But apparently, that was enough for Netflix to hand Gerwig the keys to a massive VFX-heavy fantasy franchise. And not just ANY fantasy franchise. One of the most beloved works of Christian fiction ever written. So naturally, Hollywood decides the perfect person to adapt a story built around Christian theology is a director whose worldview is at odds with the very foundation of the books. I've got an idea! Let's hire the director of The Devil Wears Prada to remake Lord of the Rings! It'll be FANTASTIC! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?! OH, DOES IT GETS BETTER... According to the rumors, the executives responsible for this brilliant decision are getting the boot. Including Netflix's Head of Film, Dan Lin, who supposedly had a massive falling-out with Gerwig over the film, along with two other executives. So of course that means we're getting reports of DISCRIMINATION at Netflix because those executives are Asian and female. Because there's NO WAY handing a beloved Christian franchise to a filmmaker who thinks Aslan should be trans and Digory and Polly need their personalities swapped because—GIRL POWER! BOSS BABE!!!! WOOOOO!!!—would be a terrible idea! Don't worry! They'll fix it in post! Just shove more generic VFX in it... Terrible decisions? Hundreds of millions wasted? Completely misunderstanding the IP and its audience? NAH! It's obviously racism and sexism! Only in Hollywood can you blow a fortune, alienate your audience, butcher the source material, and still somehow be the VICTIM!
