Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso briefs the SABC TV News audiences about the purpose of today’s occasion at the Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre in Johannesburg.
The Minister will be handing over the leasehold rights certificates which have been upgraded into full title deeds.
The handover ceremony of the upgraded leasehold certificates provides full security of tenure to the rightful affected property owners in Soweto.
Under the previous discriminatory laws, blacks in the townships including Soweto were not afforded an opportunity to own full title deeds to their properties. Instead, they were granted the certificates of leasehold with limited rights.
With this momentous occasion, the Minister not only legitimises, but also restores the property ownership rights to the residents. Property owner can now also use their new title deeds as collaterals for certain transactions.

"We are gathered here not merely to introduce a state policy, but to advance a revolutionary turning
point in the ongoing struggle to resolve the land and agrarian question in our country,” said Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso during his keynote address.
The Minister also touched on the theme of the launch. “We are doing so under the forward-looking theme, ‘From Land Access to Sustainable Livelihoods:
Empowering Rural Communities Through Integrated Support”.
He further said that returning land without comprehensive and restorative support for those who receive it is not justice, but it is an empty
gesture. "Land without the means to productively use it simply perpetuates the inequalities of the past. Today, with the
inauguration of the ILRRDSP, we are declaring that the era of
dumping our people on land without support is officially over,” charged Nyhontso.

[Today] Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development Mzwanele Nyhontso is in the Western Cape to hand over title deeds
for Bainskloof Estate located in Wellington and Romans Flora farm in Riversdale. This handover follows a transfer and donation of Bainskloof Estate to the Western Cape KhoiSan Trust and the Romans Flora farm to the Ruiters family.
Ahead of the handover, the Minister is conducting a site visit to Nirwanda, a table grape farm located in De Doorns to witness the turnaround the Nirwanda farm has undergone following vandalism which left the farm in ruins. All the infrastructure and vineyards on this farm were vandalised and the house was damaged.
Currently this farm operates under a new lessee, Mr Henry Minnies who is currently working with the department to turnaround the farm and possibly return it to its former glory. The department, through its Land Development Support Programme has supported the farm with agricultural inputs and infrastructure upgrades. Nirwanda PLAS farm was funded through LDS Programme for a total amount of R11 050 534.00.

The Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Mzwanele Nyhontso, MP, has studied the statement issued on 6 October 2026 by the Private Office of His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. The Minister believes His Majesty and stands with him. He responds to His Majesty’s concerns directly in this statement.
The Minister views with serious concern any allegation, from any quarter, that seeks to tarnish the good name and standing of His Majesty, who is the sole trustee of the Ingonyama Trust and the Chairperson of the Ingonyama Trust Board (the Board). This includes the claim that His Majesty instructed or dispatched Amabutho to disrupt the Ingonyama Trust Rural Economy Development and Investment Indaba held at the Durban International Convention Centre on 30 September 2026. His Majesty has categorically denied it. The Minister accepts his statement without reservation, and rejects the claim as false. He supports His Majesty’s call that anyone who repeats it must substantiate it, or withdraw it and correct the record.

Govt is indirectly subsidising the Shoprite CEOs salary every time it pays for the education, healthcare and other welfare costs of Shoprite workers families.
Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht received a total earned remuneration package of R118 million (or R117.79 million) for the 2026 financial year, which is more than R30 million higher than his R87 million package from the previous year. The package is driven largely by the vesting of the Executive Super Stretch Incentive (ESSI) and share appreciation rights. His actual take-home pay was R73 million.
The actual take-home pay of the CEO was more than 1 100 times higher than the R64,000 earned annually by the group's lowest-paid employee as reports indicate that roughly half of Shoprite's workforce earns less than R7,700 a month. Under South Africa’s amendment to section 30 of Companies Act, public companies and state-owned enterprises are legally required to disclose the pay gap between their highest and lowest paid workers.
