There's still a lot of confusion about this, especially in the financial planning community. This two-minute video explains it clearly. youtube.com/watch?v=0cphJcNy…

As a real estate agent, I often see the sale of a home or assets to pay for care. That money will be used for care until you are down to I believe around $3K total assets in this world - then you can go on Medicaid (govt assistance). NO one tells people to buy or invest in LONG TERM CARE Insurance or have a separate savings to pay for care. There is a great Twitter account who talks about this @LTCShop

Many people assume that if their parents or grandparents died young, they won't need long term care. The reality is that modern medicine has changed the equation. The condition that may have taken a family member's life years ago could now be something you survive, and live with for years while needing care. When deciding whether long term care insurance makes sense, focus on your income, assets, and what you want to protect. Don't rely on family history alone. A "cheap" insurance policy that spikes 15 years later isn't a bargain. It's an actuarial time bomb. Modern LTCi is fully funded from day one for real interest rates and real claim durations. You pay an honest price upfront so you aren't ambushed down the road. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

Did you know 41 states have a regulation that completely changes how insurance companies price their policies? 🤯 By removing the profit incentive from rate hikes, carriers now have a massive reason to keep your premiums level. 🥕 The carrot? Keep premiums level, keep the upfront profit. 🏑 The stick? Ask for a rate hike, and the state slashes your margins. If you're buying a policy today, this protection is a game-changer. Why did 1990s long-term care insurance see massive rate hikes? Actuaries assumed 5% of people would cancel every year. Reality: Less than 1% lapsed. People held onto their LTCi policies, interest rates dropped, and claims doubled projections. Today’s policies bake in real claims data and sub-1% lapse rates upfront. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

Why is long-term care insurance so much better today than it was in the '90s and early 2000s? In Episode 2 of our series, Scott Olson dives into three massive upgrades that protect modern consumers: 1️⃣ Strict Pricing Rules: Regulators have removed the profit incentive from rate increases, protecting you from the rate hike rollercoaster. 2️⃣ Standardized Triggers: Universal standards have eliminated the confusing fine-print loopholes of the past. 3️⃣ IRS Rules: Modern policies come with unmatched tax advantages that older policies simply couldn't offer. Counterintuitive truth: Modern long-term care policies are the most expensive ever sold and that’s the BEST thing that ever happened to consumers. Long term care insurance isn't the right solution for everyone. For some retirees with lower income and assets, qualifying for Medicaid funded long term care may be relatively straightforward. In those situations, a full long term care insurance policy may not make financial sense. However, an affordable short term care or recovery policy could help cover the first several months of care and potentially reduce reliance on long Medicaid waiting lists. The best long term care plan depends on your unique financial situation, not a one size fits all approach. If someone cannot comfortably afford long term care insurance, it should not be forced into the plan. That part is simple. The more important question is how a long term care event affects a couple’s retirement. When there is a large age gap, one spouse may live 10 to 20 years longer than the other. If care costs force withdrawals from retirement accounts, the younger spouse can lose long term income that was meant to support their future. Self funding care does not just reduce savings. It also reduces the ongoing income those savings were producing. Think you need an unlimited long-term care policy? You don’t. Under state Partnership programs, you only need to insure the assets you want to protect. If care outlasts your policy, Medicaid steps in and your sheltered balance sheet stays 100% intact. 22 Reasons Why LTC Insurance is A LOT Better Today than 25 Years Ago: youtu.be/1684VXCN9hk

They chose to put their money into a house instead of long term care insurance. Your descendants shouldn't benefit from your decision to rely on taxpayers to bail you out any more than they should benefit from you racking up credit card debt instead of paying cash for purchases.
